New Zealand is one of the most physically varied countries on earth, and one of the most compact. Two islands hold fiords, volcanoes, glaciers, geothermal fields, wine regions, and coastline that shifts character every hundred miles.
Here at Out Of Office, we truly understand the world you live in, and the world you want to explore. Our attention to detail, exceptional service and deep understanding of both luxury travel and LGBTQ+ travel make us a fantastic choice for those looking for a travel experience where exclusivity meets inclusivity.
New Zealand’s landscapes are the reason most people make the journey. Fiords that drop sheer from mountain summits into still black water. Geothermal fields where the earth breaks open into geysers and boiling mud. Glaciers that calve into lakes of impossible blue. Volcanic peaks rising above native forest. Wine valleys running down to the Pacific.
The distances between major experiences are short enough to make a well-planned two-week trip feel comprehensive rather than rushed.
The country’s luxury lodge scene is among the best in the world. These are not large resort hotels with good views; they are small, remote properties, typically six to fifteen suites, built around settings that would be impossible to replicate at scale.
Kauri Cliffs in Northland, Blanket Bay on Lake Wakatipu, The Farm at Cape Kidnappers on the Hawke’s Bay cliffs: each earns its rate through location, food, and the quality of what surrounds it.
New Zealand also has the cultural depth to match the scenery. Rotorua sits at the center of Maori heritage and one of the world’s most active geothermal landscapes. Marlborough produces sauvignon blanc best tasted a short drive from the vineyard.
Wellington punches well above its size for food, galleries, and Te Papa, the national museum. Auckland’s waterfront and the wine estates of Waiheke Island reward more than the standard transit night most visitors give them.
The journey is long from Europe or North America, which is partly what keeps it from feeling overrun. Travelers who make it here tend to be serious about the destination, and New Zealand rewards that seriousness.

New Zealand sits in the South Pacific, roughly four hours flying time east of Australia. It comprises two main islands: the North Island, which is warmer, more volcanic, and home to the country’s two largest cities; and the South Island, which holds the fiords, the Southern Alps, the glacier country, and the luxury lodge scene that draws most international visitors.
The country is small enough to cover comprehensively in two to three weeks, and varied enough that two weeks spent in a single region still feels like a complete trip.
New Zealand drives on the left, uses the New Zealand dollar, and requires no visa for US, UK, EU, or Australian passport holders for stays under three months, though an NZeTA electronic travel authorization applies to most nationalities.
Tipping is not expected. The food and wine scene is excellent, particularly in Auckland, Wellington, Marlborough, and Hawke’s Bay.
New Zealand has one of the most comprehensive legal frameworks for LGBTQ+ rights in the world. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1986. In 2013, New Zealand became the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to legalize same-sex marriage.
Anti-discrimination protections cover sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression across employment, housing, and public services.
Legal gender recognition does not require surgery or medical intervention, placing New Zealand among the most accessible countries in the world for transgender travelers seeking legal recognition.
In practical terms, LGBTQ+ couples and solo travelers will find New Zealand uniformly welcoming.
Auckland has the most visible LGBTQ+ scene, centered on the Karangahape Road area, and hosts a Pride festival each February.
Wellington has a similarly relaxed culture in a more compact setting. Outside the cities, the absence of any need for caution is itself notable: checking into a remote lodge in Fiordland or a vineyard estate in Central Otago, same-sex couples are received without comment.
New Zealand is one of the furthest destinations on earth for most travelers. From the UK it’s a minimum of twenty-two hours in the air. From the US East Coast, around seventeen. That journey demands a trip that justifies it, and the good news is that New Zealand is entirely capable of delivering one. For many travelers it becomes the definitive trip, the one everything else is measured against.
Getting it right requires proper planning. The two islands are distinct in character and the best itinerary balances time between them thoughtfully rather than rushing through highlights. The luxury lodge scene is exceptional but intimate by design, with the best properties carrying only a handful of suites and booking out months ahead. Milford Sound, the Marlborough wine country, Rotorua’s geothermal landscapes and the Southern Alps each reward more time than a busy itinerary typically allows.
Out Of Office builds New Zealand trips that justify the journey. We match lodges to the character of each region and the pace you want, sequence the two islands in a way that flows naturally, and ensure the time spent getting there is repaid many times over by what awaits.
The South Island is where most visitors find what they came to New Zealand for. The Southern Alps run the length of the island, dramatic and snow-capped, with Queenstown sitting at their foot on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Fiordland National Park occupies the southwest corner, one of the most remote and spectacular landscapes on earth. The glacier country around Fox and Franz Josef, the Mackenzie Basin with its impossibly blue lakes, and the wine estates of Central Otago add further variety to an island that rewards more time than most itineraries allow. The luxury lodge scene is concentrated here, with properties like Blanket Bay and Minaret Station offering the kind of remote, intimate experience that defines New Zealand luxury travel at its best.
Milford Sound is one of the great natural experiences in the world and consistently ranks among New Zealand’s most visited destinations for good reason. Sheer cliffs rise over a thousand metres directly from the water, waterfalls cascade down rock faces that see over seven metres of rainfall a year, and the fiord extends fourteen kilometres into the heart of Fiordland. Dolphins, fur seals and penguins are regular sightings. The drive in along the Milford Road through the Homer Tunnel is an experience in itself. Doubtful Sound, deeper into Fiordland and accessible only by boat across Lake Manapouri, is quieter and arguably more dramatic still.
Rotorua sits at the centre of New Zealand’s North Island on a geothermal field that produces geysers, boiling mud pools and hot springs throughout the city and surrounding landscape. It is also the heartland of Māori culture, with more opportunities here than anywhere else in New Zealand to engage seriously with indigenous traditions, history and performance. The hangi feast, the haka, the carved meeting houses and the living cultural villages give context to a culture that is woven through every aspect of New Zealand life. Beyond Rotorua, the North Island offers the wine estates of Hawke’s Bay, the harbour and restaurant scene of Wellington, and Kauri Cliffs in Northland, one of the country’s finest luxury lodges set above a stretch of coastline that sees almost no other visitors.
New Zealand’s luxury lodge scene is among the best in the world and unlike anything else in its category. These are not large resort hotels with good views. They are small, remote properties, typically fewer than fifteen suites, built around settings that would be impossible to replicate at scale.
Kauri Cliffs in Northland sits above a private stretch of coastline with its own golf course and almost no neighbouring development. Blanket Bay on Lake Wakatipu combines mountain and lake scenery with a level of personal service that matches any property globally. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers perches on clifftops above Hawke’s Bay with a working farm, exceptional food and some of the most dramatic landscape in the country.
Minaret Station in the Southern Alps is accessible only by helicopter, with four private chalets set in a glacial valley that sees no other visitors. Huka Lodge on the Waikato River near Taupo has been hosting heads of state and discerning travelers for decades and remains the benchmark for North Island luxury.
Out Of Office knows these properties in depth, matches each to the right traveler and the right part of the itinerary, and secures availability at lodges that book out months ahead.
New Zealand is one of the furthest-flung long-haul destinations from either Europe or North America, and the journey is worth factoring into how you plan the trip. The distances are real, but the routing options are better than they used to be.
The most common routes run from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Auckland, with several airlines offering direct service. Flight time is roughly 12 to 13 hours.
East Coast travelers typically connect through LA or San Francisco, adding two to three hours to the total journey. Some routes also connect through Sydney or Brisbane, which can work well for travelers combining New Zealand with Australia.
There is no direct service from Europe to New Zealand. The most common routing is via Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, or Doha, with total journey times from London typically running 24 to 28 hours including the connection. Singapore Airlines via Singapore and Emirates via Dubai are two of the most popular options.
Travelers connecting through Singapore or Hong Kong can add a one or two night stopover without significant extra cost, which breaks the journey usefully and arrives in New Zealand with less accumulated fatigue.
