Finland divides neatly into two entirely different trips, and most visitors only discover one of them. Winter in Lapland is the headline: glass igloos under the Northern Lights, husky sleds through pine forests, reindeer safaris across the tundra and a darkness and quiet that has no equivalent in mainstream European travel. The luxury infrastructure that has grown up around it, at Kakslauttanen and the Arctic Treehouse Hotel among others, is world-class.
Here at Out Of Office, we truly understand the world you live in, and the world you want to explore. Our attention to detail, exceptional service and deep understanding of both luxury travel and LGBTQ+ travel make us a fantastic choice for those looking for a travel experience where exclusivity meets inclusivity.
The summer version of Finland is extraordinary. Between mid-May and mid-August the sun does not set, and the country that spent winter under snow reveals itself as a landscape of lakes, forests and archipelago coastline bathed in continuous golden light.
Helsinki is the least Scandinavian-feeling of the Nordic capitals, with a design culture, a restaurant scene and an architectural character shaped by its position between east and west.
Tampere, built between two great lakes in the country’s interior, has emerged as one of northern Europe’s most likeable mid-sized cities.
Turku, the former capital on the southwest coast, carries its medieval history lightly and rewards a day or two on any itinerary that has time for it.
Finland’s Arctic offer is more developed and more varied than most of its competitors. Norway draws travelers for the fjords, Iceland for the volcanic landscapes, but Finland’s Lapland has invested more in the luxury accommodation infrastructure than either, with properties like Kakslauttanen and the Arctic Treehouse Hotel offering a standard of design and comfort that turns the Arctic experience into something more indulgent.
The glass igloo concept, now widely imitated, originated here. The reindeer safaris, the husky expeditions and the ice fishing are not add-ons but central to a Lappish culture that is distinct from anything else in the Nordic region.
Finland legalized same-sex marriage in 2017 and Helsinki has a well-established LGBTQ+ scene. The country’s broader culture is open and unselfconscious in a way that makes it straightforwardly welcoming for LGBTQ+ travelers throughout.

Finland operates on Eastern European Time, two hours ahead of the UK and seven ahead of the East Coast of the US. The country is larger than it looks on a map: Helsinki to Rovaniemi in the heart of Lapland is around 830 kilometers, and domestic flights are the practical option for combining a city stay with an Arctic itinerary. Finnair operates frequent connections between Helsinki and Lapland’s main airports at Rovaniemi and Ivalo.
The sauna is not a hotel amenity in Finland. It is a cultural institution, and the Finns take it seriously. Most luxury properties have private saunas, and the tradition of alternating between extreme heat and cold water, whether a lake, a hole in the ice or a cold plunge, is worth engaging with properly rather than treating as a novelty. Tampere alone has over fifty public saunas.
Finland consistently ranks among the happiest and most stable countries in the world, and it shows in the quality of daily life. Service is unhurried, infrastructure is excellent and the country functions with an efficiency that makes travel logistics straightforward. Tipping is not embedded in Finnish culture in the way it is in the US, though rounding up or leaving a small amount in restaurants is appreciated.
The currency is the euro. Healthcare is excellent and the country is very safe. English is widely spoken, particularly among younger Finns and in the tourism and hospitality sector.
Finland legalized same-sex marriage in 2017 and has comprehensive anti-discrimination protections covering employment, housing and public services. The legal framework is among the most progressive in northern Europe.
In practice, Finland is one of the most welcoming countries in the region for LGBTQ+ travelers. Helsinki’s scene is well-established, with a concentration of bars, clubs and cultural spaces in the city center and a Pride each June that is one of the largest in the Nordic region.
Beyond the capital, Finland’s broader culture is open and unselfconscious in a way that makes travel throughout the country straightforward.
Finland is a destination where the planning decisions matter more than most. Winter or summer, Lapland or the cities, a single-focus trip or a combination — these are choices that shape the entire experience, and getting them right requires knowing the country well. Out Of Office has been building Finland itineraries for years and the expertise shows in the itineraries we build.
Lapland at peak season is one of the hardest allocations in luxury travel. Kakslauttanen’s glass igloos and the best suites at the Arctic Treehouse Hotel sell out months in advance for the prime Northern Lights window and the Christmas period. Booking early and knowing which properties are worth the premium is the difference between the trip you wanted and a compromise.
A well-built Finland itinerary means the right experiences in the right order: private husky expeditions, exclusive reindeer safaris, guided Northern Lights tracking away from the resort crowds in winter; archipelago sailing, late-night lake swimming and long Helsinki evenings in summer. Out Of Office handles all domestic flights and transfers.
Watching the Aurora Borealis from a heated glass igloo in the Finnish wilderness is the experience that defines Lapland for most visitors, and it delivers. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, where the concept originated, remains the benchmark, with private igloos set far enough apart to feel genuinely isolated. The lights are not guaranteed, but Finland’s Lapland sits within the Aurora Oval, the band of sky where activity is most consistent, and a stay of three or four nights gives reasonable odds. A private Northern Lights tracking excursion with a guide away from the resort increases them further.
Finland’s capital rewards more time than most Nordic city breaks allow. The Design District concentrates some of the best Scandinavian design retail and gallery space in the region. The Market Hall and the waterfront harbor market are serious food destinations. The architecture ranges from Alvar Aalto’s functionalist landmarks to the onion domes of the Uspenski Cathedral, a reminder of Helsinki’s position on the cultural boundary between western Europe and Russia. The restaurant scene has matured significantly and the city’s sauna culture, experienced properly at one of the traditional lakeside saunas, is worth an evening of any itinerary.
Finland between mid-May and mid-August operates under continuous daylight, and the effect on daily life is significant. Locals swim in lakes at midnight, festivals run through the night and the landscape takes on a quality of light that is unlike anything in conventional European travel. An archipelago cruise through the 50,000 islands of the Baltic during the midnight sun period is one of the more quietly extraordinary travel experiences available in northern Europe.
Finland’s luxury travel market has developed in two distinct directions, and both are worth understanding. In Lapland, the investment has gone into destination properties that make the Arctic landscape the point: glass igloos, treehouse suites, wilderness lodges and ice hotels that combine serious design with direct access to the natural environment. These are not hotels that happen to be in a dramatic location. The location is inseparable from the experience, and the best properties understand that completely.
In the cities, the luxury offer is quieter but no less considered. Helsinki’s Hotel Kämp, on the Esplanade in the heart of the city, is the landmark address, a grand 19th century property that has maintained its position at the top of the Finnish market. The Maria Hotel, in a converted 1840s hospital in the Design District, represents the newer generation of Finnish luxury, design-led, locally rooted and serious about food. Tampere and Turku both have strong boutique hotel offerings that suit travelers who want something more intimate than the international chain standard.
Finnish design runs through the luxury experience at every level. The country that produced Aalto, Iittala and Marimekko has an aesthetic sensibility that is evident in its best hotels, restaurants and private properties, and it gives Finnish luxury a visual coherence and restraint that distinguishes it from the more maximalist end of the European market.

Finland is well-connected from both the UK and the US. Finnair operates direct services from London Heathrow to Helsinki in around three hours, and from New York JFK in just under nine. British Airways also flies the London to Helsinki route. From other major US cities, the most common routing is via Helsinki with a connection, or via another European hub. Helsinki Airport is Finnair’s main hub and handles onward connections efficiently.
For Lapland itineraries, the key gateway airports are Rovaniemi and Ivalo in the far north. Finnair operates direct winter seasonal services from London to Rovaniemi, which makes a Lapland trip straightforward without the need to transit through Helsinki. During the summer season, connections run via Helsinki. Rovaniemi is the more developed destination, sitting on the Arctic Circle with the full range of resort infrastructure. Ivalo is further north and better positioned for travelers whose priority is maximum darkness and Northern Lights activity.
Helsinki Airport sits around twenty minutes from the city center by train, and the connection is straightforward. Out Of Office arranges all onward transfers and domestic connections as part of the itinerary build.
