Ancient Greece told these stories openly, in poetry, philosophy, and public life, long before the modern language for them existed. Sappho wrote of love between women on Lesbos; Plato built entire arguments around love between men in Athens. Little of it was hidden. It simply belonged.

This itinerary moves through Athens, Delphi, and the Peloponnese with that history as its throughline, tracing where these ideas were recorded, debated, and lived rather than treating them as a footnote to the ruins.

Guides for this route are chosen specifically for their depth in this history, moving beyond the standard site commentary into the textual and archaeological evidence itself: what Plato’s Symposium argued about love between men, what survives of Sappho’s fragments, and how later centuries edited or erased this material from the classical record.

Hotels are kept boutique and independently run throughout, in cities where that history is closest to the surface.

Day 1: Arrive in Athens

You will be met on arrival at Athens International Airport and transferred to your centrally located boutique hotel. After check-in, enjoy a welcome drink and an orientation session with your local guide, who will introduce the tour themes and the historical context of LGBTQ+ life in ancient Greece. In the evening, dine at a rooftop restaurant with views of the Acropolis.

Day 2: Classical Athens and Queer Histories

The day begins with a private guided tour of the Acropolis, taking in the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion. The guide’s focus goes beyond the standard commentary, drawing out what the site and its era reveal about relationships between male citizens, gender in Greek mythology, and the social structure that shaped Athenian life.

The afternoon moves to the Ancient Agora, the political heart of ancient Athens and the setting for one of its most enduring stories: Harmodius and Aristogeiton, lovers whose assassination of a tyrant here in 514 BC saw them later honored as founding heroes of Athenian democracy, their story retold for centuries as an example of love between men shaping the course of the city itself. From there, a walking tour through Plaka and Monastiraki closes the day, tracing the old city’s layout against everything covered that afternoon.

Day 3: Sappho and the Spirit of the Isles

The day turns to the women of this history: Sappho of Lesbos above all, whose surviving fragments remain some of the earliest written expressions of love between women. Lesbos itself isn’t part of this route, but the guide places her work in context, alongside a visit to the National Archaeological Museum, where painted pottery and sculpture reveal how gender and desire were actually depicted in daily Athenian life, not just written about.

The evening opens up. Gazi, Athens’s LGBTQ+ nightlife hub, is the pick for cocktails and a livelier pace, or a quieter taverna dinner for those who’d rather wind down.

Day 3: Sappho and the Spirit of the Isles

Day 4: Day Trip to Delphi

The route moves to Delphi, once regarded as the center of the ancient world. A specialist guide leads the group through the Temple of Apollo, the ancient theater, and the site museum, covering the social and religious roles the sanctuary held in antiquity. One detail worth sitting with: the Oracle’s prophecies were always delivered through the Pythia, a woman chosen for the role, her voice carrying what was understood to be the words of a male god, an arrangement that placed female authority at the center of the ancient world’s most consulted institution.

The group returns to Athens by evening, with dinner left at leisure.

Day 4: Day Trip to Delphi

Day 5: Corinth and Nafplio

Leaving Athens, the first stop is ancient Corinth, once one of the wealthiest cities in Greece, its temples, agora, and fountain houses still legible among the ruins. From there, the route continues to Nafplio, a coastal town shaped by its period under Venetian rule, with a seafront promenade that remains one of the most walkable in the Peloponnese.

The evening is unhurried: check-in at a seaside hotel, followed by a walk through Nafplio’s old town as the light changes.

Day 5: Corinth and Nafplio

Day 6: Private Cruise and Coastal Mythology

A private boat cruise runs along the Argolic Gulf, with stops for swimming along the way. The guide uses the time on the water for some of the region’s best-known myths, Poseidon’s rule over the sea, and the story of Apollo and Hyacinthus, one of Greek mythology’s clearest depictions of love between men, tied directly to the landscape the group is moving through.

Dinner back in Nafplio closes the day, at a restaurant built around regional Greek cooking with a more contemporary hand.

Day 7: Departure

After breakfast, transfer back to Athens for your international departure or onward travel.
