Explore the most romantic coastline in Italy
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most romantic destinations in Italy, with its clifftop villages and terraced lemon groves. You’ll be greeted with arguably the best views in Europe when you arrive. Make your way through the winding streets of Amalfi, Positano and Atrani. Enjoy easily navigable day trips to Sorrento or Capri. For literary fans, you can even take a trip to Gore Vidal’s old house in Ravello.
Italy legalized same-sex civil unions in 2016, and while the country continues evolving on LGBTQ+ rights, the Amalfi Coast’s sophisticated international atmosphere and luxury hospitality industry have created an environment where same-sex couples can celebrate their love in an impossibly glamorous setting.

Why the Amalfi Coast Works for Gay Honeymooners
The coastline’s appeal extends far beyond its postcard-perfect scenery. The region’s luxury hotels and restaurants attract many luxury travelers, as Instagram users will be aware. The area’s compact geography means you can experience multiple destinations – Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, and Capri – within a single trip, while excellent transportation connections make it easily accessible from major European cities or as part of a broader Italian adventure.
Practically speaking, the Amalfi Coast is a year-round destination, though late spring through early fall provides the warmest weather for beach activities and outdoor dining. The region’s culinary offerings have earned international acclaim, while its dramatic landscapes provide countless opportunities for romantic experiences from sunset sailing trips to private vineyard tours. Most importantly, the area’s focus on luxury tourism means staff at top properties are trained in international hospitality standards at the highest level.
Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast
Positano remains the coast’s most aesthetically appealing destination, with its colorful houses perched on the cliffsides. Le Sirenuse is the undisputed queen of Positano’s luxury hotel scene, occupying an 18th-century villa overlooking the Mediterranean. This legendary property has hosted everyone from John Steinbeck to modern-day A-list celebrities.
The hotel includes hand-painted Vietri ceramics, original artwork, and fresh flowers throughout public spaces that feel more like an aristocratic residence than a commercial property. Each of the 58 rooms and suites have private terraces with sweeping views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, while interiors showcase meticulous attention to detail through custom fabrics, marble bathrooms, and locally crafted furnishings. Le Sirenuse gives you the ultimate luxury Italian honeymoon experience.

Tailor-Made Vacation
Ravello gives you elevated romance – literally and figuratively – perched 365 meters above sea level with panoramic views that inspired Wagner’s Parsifal. Hotel Caruso occupies an 11th-century palace with terraced gardens that provide the perfect setting for sunset cocktails. Their infinity pool, carved from ancient rock formations, offers swimming with views that stretch to the horizon, while suites feature private terraces where breakfast can be served as the morning sun illuminates the coastline below.
Romantic Experiences on the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast’s dramatic geography creates the perfect backdrop for a romantic trip. As a matter of fact, you’d struggle to find a more honeymoon-appropriate setting in Europe. Private boat excursions reveal hidden coves and grottos accessible only from the sea, while sunset sailing trips around Capri as the famous Faraglioni rocks glow in the light are very appealing. The Amalfi Coast has always been a magnet for the global elite, so you’ll see many yachts sailing around here. For land-based adventures, the Path of the Gods hiking trail provides spectacular panoramic views while connecting Positano to other coastal towns through ancient footpaths. Less adventurous couples can explore by vintage Vespa, stopping at family-run lemon groves where limoncello tastings provide an excuse for daytime drinking.
Meanwhile, cooking classes focused on local specialties like sfogliatelle pastries and fresh seafood preparations provide intimate experiences you can recreate at home. Wine tastings at hillside vineyards showcase local varieties like Falanghina and Fiano, often paired with sunset views that over the Mediterranean.
Essential Day Trips: Exploring Beyond the Amalfi Coast
Capri and Sorrento: Capri remains the most glamorous day trip from the Amalfi Coast, easily accessible by hydrofoil from Amalfi or Positano in just 45 minutes. The approach by sea reveals Capri’s dramatic limestone cliffs and the famous Faraglioni rock formations that have inspired countless artists and writers, while the Marina Grande arrival sets the stage for a day of island exploration.
Take the funicular railway up to Capri town for designer shopping along Via Camerelle, where international luxury brands occupy charming island boutiques, then continue to Anacapri for breathtaking views from Monte Solaro accessible by chairlift that provides panoramic vistas across the Bay of Naples. Keep an eye peeled and you may even see Beyonce’s yacht.
Visiting Pompeii from the Amalfi Coast makes for one of Italy’s most rewarding day trips. You can walk through remarkably preserved ancient Roman streets where daily life was frozen in time by Mount Vesuvius’s eruption in 79 AD. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes by private car service through scenic mountain roads that reveal stunning views of the Bay of Naples, while the more adventurous can take the local SITA bus to Sorrento and connect to the Circumvesuviana railway for an authentic Italian transport experience that locals use daily.
Pompeii or Herculaneum – Which Should You Visit?
Upon arrival, the archaeological site reveals an entire city preserved in volcanic ash – from elaborate frescoed villas like the House of the Vettii with its sophisticated garden courtyards, to the haunting plaster casts of Pompeii’s final residents, to remarkably intact amphitheaters, bathhouses, and even ancient fast-food establishments called thermopolia where Romans grabbed quick meals nearly 2,000 years ago.
Sorrento offers a completely different but equally rewarding experience, perched on cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples with a sophisticated town center perfect for leisurely exploration. Sorrento’s town centre is surprisingly small – about the size of a postage stamp – so you can walk around it very quickly. You can then wine and dine at a waterfront restaurant with Mount Vesuvius creating a fabulous backdrop across the bay. Don’t worry, it hasn’t erupted for a very long time.
There are also fabulous hotels in Sorrento, including Hotel Parco dei Principi di Sorrento, where you’ll find a more contemporary 5-star experience. For a more old-school 5-star experience, we usually recommend Grand Hotel Ambasciatori. Staying in Sorrento can be a great choice as you get the sweeping views and it’s mostly flat; whereas Amalfi and Positano are perched on the cliffside so walking can be a challenge for some.
Italy’s dolce vita extends to its sun-soaked coasts, where you’ll find a selection of gay beaches populated by Italy’s finest. From the chic Riviera of Tuscany to the crystal coves of Puglia, there’s something for every upscale traveler. Picture yourself...We Suggest...

Naples: Naples gives you a more gritty view of southern Italian culture that contrasts beautifully with the Amalfi Coast’s polished resort atmosphere. The city’s UNESCO World Heritage historic center houses incredible treasures including the archaeological museum with its world-class collection of Pompeii artifacts, ornate baroque churches like the Duomo with its stunning frescoed ceilings, and the underground Naples tour that reveals Greek and Roman ruins beneath the modern city streets.
Get lost in the gritty, chaotic streets with vespers hurtling and discover the city’s charms. It’s surprisingly romantic in Naples, especially if you’re a history buff. It’s one of the most ancient cities in Europe.
However, Naples’ true charm lies in its unparalleled culinary scene – this is where pizza was invented, and eating at legendary establishments like Da Michele or Sorbillo provides not just exceptional food but cultural education about authentic Neapolitan traditions that have influenced global cuisine. Pizza is pretty much the only food on offer in Naples, so prepare yourself for carbs. What’s more, the bars in Naples serve you tapas – entirely free of charge – that would make a decent meal unto themselves. These tapas generally involve lots of bread. Naples is close to the airport so it’s an ideal place to wind up your trip before flying home.
