Planning a gay honeymoon in the Maldives? Discover the best LGBTQ+ friendly resorts, what to expect, and how to choose the right island for your trip.
The question comes up on almost every enquiry. A same-sex couple, newly engaged, has been dreaming of the Maldives for years. Overwater villa, Indian Ocean, the whole picture. Then they do some research and find that homosexuality is technically illegal under Maldivian law. They come back to us uncertain, sometimes alarmed, and wondering whether they should be looking at the Maldives at all.
We’ve been sending LGBTQ+ couples to the Maldives for over a decade. It remains, without question, our single most booked gay honeymoon destination. Here is why that is, and why we think it will stay that way.

The Legal Reality
We don’t gloss over this. Same-sex relationships are illegal in the Maldives under Islamic law, and we tell every client that plainly before they book. It’s important to us that the couples we send there go with clear eyes rather than a surprise they weren’t prepared for.
What’s equally true, and what that headline figure doesn’t capture, is that the Maldives has operated a dual reality for decades. Alcohol is also illegal under Maldivian law. It flows freely at every resort. The country’s economy depends almost entirely on international tourism, and the resort islands function as private jurisdictions where the legal code of the mainland simply does not apply in practice. This is not a loophole or a grey area. It is the deliberate, long-standing structure of how Maldivian tourism operates.
No Out Of Office client has ever experienced any issue as a same-sex couple in the Maldives. Not one, across more than a decade of bookings.
What the Resort Experience Actually Looks Like
The properties in our Maldives collection are not merely tolerant of LGBTQ+ guests. The best of them are genuinely, warmly welcoming. We know which resort managers personally ensure that honeymoon details are handled correctly for same-sex couples without needing to be asked. We know which properties extend every honeymoon benefit, room upgrades, private dinners, turndown touches, to gay couples as standard. We know which ones have been doing this long enough that it requires no conversation at all.
The nature of a Maldives resort also helps. You are, in almost every case, on a private island. Your villa is yours. The beach in front of it is yours. The level of privacy that the Maldives offers as a destination is unmatched by almost anywhere else we send clients, and for a honeymoon in particular, that seclusion is part of the appeal.
This is where working with the right team makes a difference. We have personally vetted these resorts and built direct relationships with the teams on the ground, so we know exactly how each property handles LGBTQ+ travellers in practice, not just in policy. That means we can match you to the right island and resort for your trip, based on what matters most to you, whether that is privacy, atmosphere, design or service, and ensure everything is handled properly from the outset.
Tell us where your mind keeps going back to. We will do the rest.

Where we do counsel awareness is around transit. Time spent in Malé, the capital, is time spent in a more conservative public environment, and we’re honest that same-sex couples should exercise the same discretion there that they would in any Islamic-majority city.
The good news is that the new Velana International Airport, opened in 2025, has dramatically reduced the time spent in transit, cutting arrival times from several hours to around forty-five minutes from landing to seaplane departure. The window of exposure, as it were, is now very short.
Beyond that, our advice is straightforward. Be yourself at the resort. Enjoy every moment of it. The Maldives was built for exactly the kind of holiday you’re planning.

Why It Stays at the Top of Our List
The Maldives delivers something that very few destinations can match at the honeymoon level: complete privacy, extraordinary natural beauty, world-class luxury, and a pace of life that genuinely allows you to switch off. For a first trip as a married couple, that combination is close to ideal.
We believe in informed travel. We think LGBTQ+ couples deserve honest advice about every destination we recommend, including the complicated ones. The Maldives is complicated on paper. In practice, for the couples we send there, it consistently delivers some of the most joyful, romantic, and memorable honeymoons we hear about. That is why it remains at the top of our list, and why we expect it to stay there.
Thinking about a Maldives honeymoon? Speak to our team. We know the resorts, we know the questions worth asking, and we’ll make sure every detail is right from the moment you arrive.
