Luskentyre sits on the west coast of Harris, facing an Atlantic that runs unbroken to the horizon. You set off along the shore, hooves pressing fleeting prints into wet sand, the wind carrying salt and seaweed, anticipation rising as the sun drops and washes the bay gold and rose.

Sturdy island horses have long been part of Hebridean life, used on the crofts and for getting about, and they remain part of the islands’ heritage. It once supported small fishing and crofting communities who used the beach and tidal flats for grazing and travel, and its remoteness has kept it largely untouched and timeless. Most visitors see it from a coach or on a quick drive, which rarely allows any real connection with the land or the horses.

The horses pick their way through shallow streams and over firm sand as shadows lengthen and the sky shifts from gold to deep coral and purple, lighting the bay in fleeting, changing colour.
