Sydney’s Queer Mardi Gras

Watch Dykes on Bikes open the Mardi Gras Parade on Oxford Street, then spend the festival days aboard a private boat on Sydney Harbour.

A Festival Born in Protest

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of the largest LGBTQ+ celebrations in the world, a festival of several weeks that ends with a night parade along Oxford Street in late February or early March.

It began on June 24, 1978, when several hundred people marched along Oxford Street to mark the anniversary of Stonewall. Police broke up the march and arrested 53 people, whose names were later printed in the newspaper.

Today, the first marchers, known as the 78ers, still take their place in the parade. Their story is the reason Mardi Gras remains a march as well as a party.

The Parade on Oxford Street

The parade begins as the light fades, led by the roar of more than a hundred motorcycles ridden by Dykes on Bikes. Floats, dancers and community groups follow along Oxford Street and Flinders Street toward Moore Park.

Crowds line the route for hours. A reserved vantage point, at a hotel window or a ticketed viewing area, makes the evening far more comfortable than standing on the street.

The 78ers and Their Legacy

Homosexuality remained illegal in New South Wales until 1984. In 2016, the state parliament formally apologized to the 78ers for the treatment they had received.

Australia voted for marriage equality in a national survey in 2017, and the law changed that December. Your guide can talk you through how Mardi Gras helped bring that change about.

Festival Days on the Harbour

The weeks before the parade are filled with events, from Fair Day in Victoria Park to parties, exhibitions, and talks across the city. Between them, Sydney Harbour offers a different pace.

A private boat for the day lets you swim at quiet beaches, anchor near the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and return to the city as evening falls. It is the best way to see Sydney during its busiest weeks, with lunch on board and time to swim off the boat.

Darlinghurst and LGBTQ+ History

Oxford Street and Darlinghurst have been the centre of LGBTQ+ life in Sydney for decades. Qtopia Sydney, opened in 2023 in the former Darlinghurst police station, tells the stories of the community and the HIV and AIDS years.

The Stonewall Hotel and the bars nearby are busiest during Mardi Gras, while Bondi offers a beach day away from the crowds. In recent years, the Progress Pride flag has been raised over Sydney Town Hall during the festival, a sight the 78ers could hardly have imagined in 1978.

Planning Your Mardi Gras Experience

The parade usually falls on a Saturday in late February or early March, with the full festival in the weeks before. Hotels near Oxford Street and the harbour book out months ahead. Late summer weather is warm, with the occasional evening storm.

Out Of Office can secure your accommodation, parade viewing, and a private boat in the harbour, plus tickets for the festival’s most popular events. Your LGBTQ+ travel specialist can also build Mardi Gras into one of our party holidays or a longer journey through Australia.
