Is Turkey LGBTQ+ friendly?
In Turkey, same-sex relationships are legal, same-sex marriage is banned and there are no legal protections against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. Equaldex gives Turkey an Equality Index of 33 out of 100.
Source: Equaldex, checked 4 October 2026.
Turkey is a country of contrasts for LGBTQ+ travelers. Same-sex relations have been legal since the Ottoman era, and Istanbul has long had a lively, if discreet, scene around Beyoğlu and Cihangir. But the government has grown openly hostile to LGBTQ+ visibility: Istanbul Pride has been banned every year since 2015, marchers are routinely detained, and proposals to criminalize LGBTQ+ expression have been drafted and later withdrawn.
For visitors, that mostly means discretion. Same-sex couples staying at international and boutique hotels in Istanbul, Cappadocia and on the Aegean and Turquoise coasts rarely encounter problems, and sharing a room is routine. Public affection is best avoided, especially outside central Istanbul and the resort areas.
We choose hotels and guides where same-sex couples are welcomed, and will give you the latest picture when you plan.

The law vs. reality: Where it’s illegal to be gay
In over seventy countries around the world, being gay is illegal. Even laws supporting gay relationships don't necessarily mean the LGBT community are free to enjoy themselves without any concerns. For this reason, it's vital for you to be aware of the laws of some of the countries you might be longing to explore. It's why every page on our site includes detailed and up-to-date information on the law in each country.

Sitges is a coastal town just southwest of Barcelona, around 40 minutes away by train. It has some of the best gay beaches in Spain. Long a haven for artists, it’s now known as the gay holiday capital of Europe - along with Mykonos, of course. Wandering around the old town, you’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants, and a lot of gay bars.

The Law vs Reality: Gay Travel in Turkey
Turkey remains one of the most rewarding destinations in the Mediterranean, with extraordinary hotels, private yachts along the Aegean coast and fascinating layers of history, from Roman to Byzantine to Ottoman and beyond. For LGBTQ+ travellers, however, it is not a destination we would currently describe as completely straightforward. Consensual same-sex sexual activity is legal, and LGBTQ+ travellers continue to visit Istanbul, Bodrum, Cappadocia and Turkey’s major resort areas.
