Prefer not to transit through the Gulf? Here are alternative flight routes to the Maldives, Southeast Asia, East Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
For many of our clients, the question of how to get somewhere matters almost as much as the destination itself. Transiting through Qatar, the UAE, or Saudi Arabia has become routine for long-haul travel from the UK, Europe, and increasingly the United States. Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi have positioned themselves as global connecting hubs, and the airlines based there often appear as the default routing for destinations such as the Maldives, Southeast Asia, and East Africa.
For LGBTQ+ travellers, those connections can feel less comfortable. The Gulf states are not destinations where same-sex couples are likely to feel at ease, and many of our clients simply prefer to route around them entirely. Fortunately, there are plenty of excellent alternatives.
Here is what you need to know.

The Maldives
The Maldives is often associated with Gulf carriers because Qatar Airways and Emirates dominate the UK market. However, there are several strong alternatives.
SriLankan Airlines flies from London Heathrow to Malé via Colombo, with a smooth connection and the option to add a few nights in Sri Lanka at either end of the trip. Thai Airways via Bangkok and Singapore Airlines via Singapore are also excellent options depending on your departure airport and travel dates.
For travellers departing the United States, routing via Asia is often the most practical way to reach the Maldives. Singapore Airlines via Singapore, Thai Airways via Bangkok, and Eva Air via Taipei all provide comfortable one-stop connections that avoid the Gulf entirely.

Vietnam, Thailand and Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia is one of the easiest regions to reach without a Middle Eastern connection.
Finnair via Helsinki is a reliable option from Europe for Thailand and Vietnam, often competitively priced compared to Gulf carriers. Eva Air via Taipei is another strong choice, with straightforward onward flights to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, and other regional hubs.
From the United States, travellers typically route through Asia rather than the Gulf by default. Airlines including Singapore Airlines, EVA Air, Japan Airlines, ANA, and Korean Air operate smooth one-stop connections through Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo, and Seoul to destinations across Southeast Asia.

East Africa: Kenya and Tanzania
East Africa is often associated with connections through Dubai, but there are several alternatives.
Kenya Airways operates direct flights from London Heathrow to Nairobi, which is one of the simplest ways to reach the region. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa serves both Nairobi and Dar es Salaam and provides excellent connections onward to Tanzania and Zanzibar. British Airways also operates direct flights to Nairobi and, seasonally, to Kilimanjaro.
From the United States, travellers typically route via European hubs such as Amsterdam, Paris, or London, with onward connections to East Africa on airlines like KLM, Air France, or British Airways.
Your first safari should deliver the wildlife moments you’ve imagined: elephants crossing at sunset, lions prowling morning grasslands, leopards draped in acacia trees. These experiences happen consistently across Africa’s established safari circuits, but the planning determines whether you’re watching wildlife...We Suggest...

South Africa
South Africa remains one of the most popular long-haul destinations for our clients, and it is very easy to reach without a Gulf connection.
From the UK and Europe, direct flights operate to Johannesburg and Cape Town with airlines including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, while KLM, Lufthansa, and Air France provide smooth one-stop connections through their European hubs.
From the United States, South African Airways and Delta operate direct flights from cities such as New York and Atlanta to Johannesburg, while United flies from Newark. From there, it is an easy onward connection to Cape Town or the safari regions of the Eastern Cape and Kruger.

Australia and New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand are long-haul destinations where routing options have improved significantly in recent years.
Qantas operates direct flights from London to Perth with onward connections to Sydney and Melbourne, avoiding Gulf transit entirely. Singapore Airlines via Singapore is another excellent option for both Australia and New Zealand.
From the United States, transpacific routes are the most common. Qantas, United, Delta, and Air New Zealand all operate direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other West Coast cities into Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Auckland.
