Classic Italy by Train

Days 1-3: Venice

A private water taxi meets you at the station and carries you straight into the city, canals and bridges the first thing you see rather than a taxi rank or a road. There’s no other way to arrive in Venice, and that’s part of what makes the first hour here feel different from anywhere else on the trip.

A local guide leads a private walking or gondola tour built around the city’s actual history rather than a fixed script, and a night tour of St Mark’s Basilica shows the building the way it was meant to be seen, without the daytime crowds pressing in around you. A short trip out to Murano adds the island where the city’s glassblowing tradition is still practiced, not just sold in a gift shop.

Days 3-7: Florence

A high-speed train covers the distance from Venice to Florence in a little over two hours, with an executive cabin available for anyone who wants privacy for the ride, watching the countryside change from lagoon to hillside through a private window rather than a shared carriage.

The Colosseum and the Roman Forum come first, ideally with a private guide, and Palatine Hill for anyone who wants to go deeper into the city’s history than the main sights cover. A golf cart or sidecar tour is worth considering too, a faster way to cover more of the city without spending the whole day on foot, and Vatican City is an easy day trip from here, with a private tour through the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica.

Days 10-14: Amalfi Coast

A first-class train to Naples closes out the rail network’s part of the trip, the last of four cities reached without a single flight, followed by a private transfer down to Sorrento, a coastal town that works well as a base for the whole region. You’ll stay at the Bellevue Syrene, a five-star hotel with views across the Gulf of Naples, Aperol Spritz at sunset included.

Sorrento’s position makes day trips easy from here. Positano’s cliffside streets sit a short drive away, Capri a short ferry ride from the harbor, and Pompeii is conveniently placed on the route between Naples and Sorrento itself, best done with a private guide who can bring the ruins back to life rather than a printed map.
