Away from the resorts and beach clubs, a quieter Bali unfolds, one of walled ancestral villages, coffee-scented highland treks, and rice terraces that have fed the island for centuries.
This itinerary moves through rural Bali rather than its resort strip, opening in Candidasa, a quiet coastal town in the island's eastern province.

Nearby Karangasem holds the sacred Tirta Gangga Water Palace and Bali Asli, a restaurant built around traditional Balinese cooking. Sibetan's weaving traditions and the ancient village of Tenganan, home to the Bali Aga, the island's original inhabitants, add real cultural depth to the early days.
The trip continues to Lovina, passing the Besakih Temple on Mount Agung's slopes and taking in views over Lake Batur from Kintamani along the way. Lovina's beaches are calmer and considerably less visited than Bali's southern coast.
Munduk brings a change of pace entirely, with treks through coffee plantations and hidden waterfalls, and a night in Umabian offers a genuine village-style stay among rice fields.
The trip closes in Ubud, Bali's artistic and cultural center, with visits to Tirta Empul, Gunung Kawi, and the layered rice terraces at Tegalalang, alongside traditional dance and the Ubud Market.
Bali has built a reputation as one of Southeast Asia's more genuinely welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers, and this itinerary's focus on villages and countryside offers a version of that welcome away from the more commercial resort areas. Day by day
This is a sample plan, not a fixed departure. Days can be added, removed or reordered, and almost every client changes something. Prices are an entry-level guide; your quote will be exact.
Day 1: Candidasa
Arrive in Bali, where a private driver meets you at the airport and makes the transfer east to Candidasa, a coastal town that feels worlds away from the island’s more developed south.
The drive itself is part of the introduction to Bali, passing rice paddies, small temples, and roadside offerings left out fresh each morning.
The rest of the day is left at leisure, an easy way to settle into the quieter pace of this part of the island after a long flight.
Candidasa’s coastline is considerably less developed than Bali’s southern resorts, with a scattering of small guesthouses and family-run restaurants rather than large hotel chains.
The evening is a good time for a first, unhurried walk along the shore as fishing boats return for the night.
Day 2: Karangasem
A full day exploring Karangasem, one of Bali’s least visited provinces despite its cultural richness and proximity to some of the island’s most significant historical sites.
The morning centers on the Tirta Gangga Water Palace, a former royal garden built around ornamental pools, stepping stones, and fountains, commissioned by the last king of Karangasem and still meticulously maintained today.
Lunch at Bali Asli introduces authentic Balinese cooking built around local ingredients, from home-grown spices to vegetables harvested that same morning.
The afternoon continues to Sibetan, known for traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations of local families.
From there, Tenganan, an ancient walled village, is home to the Bali Aga, believed to be the island’s original inhabitants, whose customs, architecture, and social structure have remained distinct from the rest of Bali for centuries.
Day 3: Candidasa to Lovina
The journey continues north toward Lovina, on Bali’s quieter coast, with a stop at Besakih Temple along the way.
Set on the slopes of the still-active Mount Agung, Besakih is the largest and holiest temple complex on the island, comprising more than twenty separate temples connected by stone stairways and courtyards.
The site rewards a slower visit rather than a quick photo stop.
A further stop at Kintamani takes in sweeping views over Lake Batur and the volcano of the same name, often accompanied by a simple lunch overlooking the crater before the drive continues north toward the coast.
Day 4: Lovina to Munduk
Lovina’s beaches, with their distinctive black volcanic sand, are calmer and considerably less crowded than the south.
The morning is left free to enjoy them before the drive continues inland to Munduk.
A stop at Beji Temple, tucked into a quiet hillside setting, offers a peaceful interlude along the way, its Chinese-influenced architecture a reminder of Bali’s long history of cultural exchange.
Munduk itself sits high in Bali’s central hills, known for coffee and clove plantations and a noticeably cooler climate than the coast, with mist often settling over the valley by late afternoon.
Day 5: Munduk to Umabian
A day built around Munduk’s outdoor side, with a trek through coffee and clove plantations leading to a series of waterfalls tucked into the surrounding jungle.
The sound of falling water is audible well before the falls themselves come into view.
The afternoon continues to Umabian, where the night is spent in a traditional Balinese house set directly among working rice fields, a genuine village-style stay rather than a resort experience.
The sound of frogs and rustling rice stalks replaces any city noise entirely.
Day 6: Umabian to Ubud
The journey continues to Ubud, Bali’s artistic and cultural center, with the morning left free to enjoy Umabian’s rural surroundings before departure.
That might mean a slow breakfast overlooking the rice fields or a short walk through the village itself.
The drive to Ubud passes through some of central Bali’s most scenic countryside, arriving in time to settle into the town’s markedly different, more energetic pace by early evening.
Day 7: Ubud
A full day in and around Ubud, beginning with the sacred springs at Tirta Empul, where visitors can take part in a ritual purification bath alongside local worshippers, a practice that has continued at the site for over a thousand years.
From there, Gunung Kawi, an eleventh-century temple complex carved directly into a river valley’s rock face, involves a steep but rewarding descent past rice terraces to reach the shrines themselves.
The afternoon reaches the layered rice terraces at Tegalalang, one of the most photographed landscapes on the island.
Small warungs along the terrace edges offer a place to rest and take in the view.
Day 8: Ubud
A final day in Ubud, opening with traditional dance performances that draw on stories from Balinese Hindu mythology.
From there, a visit to Ubud Palace, once the seat of the local royal family and still used for ceremonies today, rounds out the morning.
The remainder of the day is left free to explore the bustling Ubud Market, known for textiles, woodcarving, and local crafts.
A private transfer to the airport follows, in good time for the departure flight.
Our Experts
Bali had a bit of a reputation as being a backpacker's paradise, and for good reason, but in recent years the island has been transformed into a playground for the wealthy. You'll find a dazzling array of luxury properties to explore.
Most people who visit Indonesia flock to the white-sand beaches of Bali, but for a more authentic Indonesian experience, be sure to sample the hustle and bustle of Jakarta - it's one of the world's most international and cosmopolitan cities.
Stellar service. Stellar products. Stellar people and it gets so much better when you pick up the phone and call.
