At a glance

A resolutely farm-to-table 5-star country house hotel in Hampshire, Heckfield Place sits at the heart of a working biodynamic estate just an hour from London, where Green Michelin-starred dining and a 17,000 square foot spa redefine what a rural retreat can be.

Heckfield Place is a 5-star luxury hotel in Hampshire, built around a lovingly restored Georgian country house set within a sculpted estate of ancient woodland, meadows, and gardens.

Six distinct room types, each finished in natural materials and meticulous craftsmanship, offer different connections to the grounds. Sustainability is not a policy here but a founding principle, with a working Home Farm, biodynamic Market Garden, orchards, and dairy feeding the kitchen every day.

Dining is the clearest expression of the estate’s philosophy. Marle, the Green Michelin-starred restaurant directed by Eleanor Henson, draws entirely on the estate’s own organic produce. The open-fire Hearth offers a more elemental counterpart. The Bothy by Wildsmith is a 17,000 square foot wellness space set within the walled gardens, offering treatments rooted in the circadian rhythm principle, thermal and hydrotherapies, and an 18m x 6m pool.

Accommodation

Friends Rooms

The most intimate rooms at Heckfield Place, set within the Corridors and House with views across the gardens and Hearth courtyard. Snug but considered, with 20th-century and Georgian furniture, handmade ceramic bedside lamps, and original British artworks from the private collection. A walk-in shower throughout, no bathtub. Well suited to shorter stays and solo travellers or couples who plan to spend most of their time in the estate’s grounds and restaurants.

Master Rooms

The most generous standard rooms at Heckfield, with large living spaces, walk-in wardrobes, separate bedrooms and bathrooms, and the majority offering private outdoor terraces for dining or relaxing. Raw oak details, hand-knotted wool rugs, embroidered screens, and uninterrupted garden views set the tone. Designed for longer stays and guests who want the full Heckfield experience without stepping up to a Signature room.

Signature Rooms

Five individually named rooms occupy the finest corners of the Georgian house, each with its own distinct character. The Long Room is the most spectacular, with a vaulted ceiling, lake views, and generous entertaining space. The Lake Room sits at the heart of the house with a sweeping bay window and panoramic estate outlook. The Heath Room occupies a secluded top-floor position with aspects to the East, South, and West. The Coppice Room offers a candlelit sitting room in sage and dusty rose, while the Ochre Room brings a sumptuous colour scheme, emperor bed, and marble bathroom to the West lawn-facing corner of the house.

Cottages

Two cottages offer a different kind of seclusion beyond the main house. Keeper’s Cottage sits on the edge of the Upper Walled Gardens with sweeping views towards The Bothy by Wildsmith, while Church Lodge is a black and white timbered gatehouse tucked within its own gardens, with a gentle palette and embroidered detailing that connects quietly to the Hampshire landscape around it.

Further information

Dining

Dining at Heckfield Place is rooted in the estate’s own biodynamic farm and seasonal rhythms. Marle is the Green Michelin-starred flagship, using a pared-back cooking style to let produce speak for itself, with reservations open to both residents and outside guests. Hearth centres on an open fire, with simple, heartfelt cooking built around the best produce available each day. The Moon Bar comes to life after dark with drinks and infusions made from the freshest estate ingredients. The Dining Room offers a communal long table for shared meals alongside a private dining option for special occasions. The Cellar hosts wine tastings and private events with an adjoining screening room bar, while the Sunday Supper Table and Shared Table add a more convivial, informal dimension to the overall offer.

Wellness

The Bothy by Wildsmith is a digital-free therapeutic spa set within the walled gardens of Heckfield Place, open daily from 7am to 7pm and available exclusively to resident guests. The philosophy is naturopathic and nature-led, with treatments guided by circadian rhythms, thermal and hydrotherapy experiences, cold water immersion, movement as medicine, and time spent in the estate’s landscape. Wildsmith treatments, retreats curated by an in-house Wellbeing Curator, and sessions with master practitioners are all available. Guests are encouraged to allow at least three hours and can arrive at dawn, noon, or dusk for a full wellbeing journey that extends well beyond a single treatment.

The destination

England

England runs on Greenwich Mean Time, shifting to British Summer Time, one hour ahead, between late March and late October. The country is compact enough that no domestic journey is particularly arduous: London to Bath takes ninety minutes by train, London to York is two hours, London to Manchester just over two.

Luxury English Country House Tour for LGBTQ+ Travellers

Tailor-made Holiday

The English country house is one of the great inventions of British civilisation. For three centuries these estates shaped the landscape, defined a way of life, and played host to the kind of private world that rarely made it into the history books. What did make it in tells a more interesting story than the official version suggests.

LGBTQ+ Theatre Trip to London: West End Shows, Soho & Stratford

Tailor-made Holiday

No country on earth does theatre quite like the United Kingdom. From the West End stages that have shaped global popular culture to the small, radical fringe venues where the next generation of writers and performers are redefining what theatre can be, Britain's relationship with live performance runs deeper than anywhere else. It is the country that gave the world Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
