World War II Tour of Europe: London, Normandy, Berlin & Krakow

Days 1 to 3: London

London sets the stage. The Churchill War Rooms, the underground bunker beneath Westminster where Churchill and his war cabinet ran Britain’s side of the war, remain almost exactly as they were left in 1945, down to the sugar cubes on the table. A private guide brings the map room and Churchill’s own bedroom to life, the nerve centre of a country fighting for its survival.

The next day, HMS Belfast on the Thames, the most significant surviving Royal Navy warship from the war, adds a different vantage point, followed by the Imperial War Museum for a deeper look at the war’s full scope.

For something further out, Bletchley Park, roughly an hour from London, is where Alan Turing and the codebreakers cracked the German Enigma cipher, arguably shortening the war by years, and is well worth the day trip for anyone with a serious interest in the intelligence side of the story.

The final day in London is left free, whether that means a return to somewhere that struck you or simply time to absorb what you’ve seen before crossing the Channel.

Days 4 to 6: Normandy

A short crossing takes you into Normandy, where the story shifts from planning to consequence. Pointe du Hoc comes first, the hundred-foot cliffs that US Army Rangers scaled under fire on June 6, 1944, to silence German guns positioned between Omaha and Utah beaches. The bomb craters and bunkers remain largely as they were left.

Omaha Beach itself is next, ground zero for the American landing and the site of the heaviest American losses of the day, followed by the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, nearly 9,400 graves on bluffs above the beach, one of the most affecting places on the entire route.

Sainte-Mère-Église, where the first American paratroopers landed and one still hangs in effigy from the church steeple where he was caught during the actual battle, rounds out the day.

Spend the final day in Normandy at your own pace, whether that’s the D-Day Landing Museum, the Overlord Museum’s collection of armored vehicles, or simply time at Arromanches, where the remains of the artificial Mulberry harbors still sit visible in the sand at low tide.

Days 7 to 9: Berlin

A flight carries you into Berlin, and the register shifts entirely, from liberation to confronting the country the war was fought against. A private guide walks you through the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate before the Topography of Terror, built on the former site of the Gestapo and SS headquarters, lays out the machinery of the regime in unflinching detail.

The next day traces what came after. The East Side Gallery, the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, and Checkpoint Charlie show how directly the war’s outcome shaped the next fifty years of European history, a city split in two for over four decades as a direct consequence of 1945. The DDR Museum fills in what daily life actually looked like on the other side of that line.

The final evening in Berlin is free, a chance to see a city that has rebuilt itself more than once and is, by any measure, thriving today.

Days 10 to 12: Krakow

A direct seven-hour train carries you into southern Poland. Krakow was one of the only major Polish cities left largely undamaged by the war, and it shows the moment you arrive, a medieval old town that never had to be rebuilt from rubble the way Warsaw did.

The next day divides between Wawel Castle and Kazimierz, the city’s historic Jewish quarter, now a district of galleries, bars, and synagogues that survived where so much else in the region didn’t.

In the afternoon, a guided visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, an hour and a half outside the city, is not an easy addition to any itinerary, luxury or otherwise, but it is very often the reason people say this trip mattered more than any other they’ve taken.

The final day is left free, time to sit with what you’ve seen before flying home from a city that, more than anywhere else on this route, shows why the whole trip needed to end here.
