Germany’s Fairy-Tale Route: Brothers Grimm, Neuschwanstein & Disney

A short drive brings you to Steinau an der Straße, where the Grimm family moved when Jacob and Wilhelm were young and where they spent much of their childhood.

The Brothers Grimm House, their actual family home, is now a museum, and the half-timbered old town around it looks much as it did two centuries ago. It’s the most personal stop on the route, the place before the fame, before the fairy tales were ever written down.

The route continues into the Reinhardswald forest, to two castles long tied to specific stories. Sababurg, remote and heavily overgrown with ivy, is widely identified as the setting behind Sleeping Beauty, isolated enough in the forest to make the legend easy to believe, and worth a full afternoon on its own.

From there, settle in for two nights at Trendelburg, whose tower has long been associated with Rapunzel and whose castle has since been converted into a hotel, meaning you can actually stay inside the story rather than just visit it for an afternoon.

With two nights here, the extra day is free, whether that means a slow morning in the castle grounds, a walk through the surrounding forest, or simply enjoying a property most visitors only ever see from the outside.

The road continues north to Hamelin, setting for the Pied Piper legend. The old town’s Rattenfängerhaus, the Rat Catcher’s House, marks where the story is traditionally said to have unfolded, and a walk through the timber-framed streets makes it easy to see why the tale has stuck to this particular town for centuries.

The Fairy Tale Route ends in Bremen, home to the bronze Town Musicians statue outside the town hall, a donkey, dog, cat, and rooster stacked one on top of the other, based on the Grimm tale of the same name. Bremen’s old town more than earns a full day on its own, and the city’s airport gives you an easy, direct route onward.

A short domestic flight from Bremen to Munich, around an hour in the air, bridges the distance to Bavaria far more comfortably than the five to six hour drive the same route would take by road. Check in to your hotel and take the evening to settle into a different side of Germany entirely.

After more than a week on the road, today is intentionally unstructured. Wander the old town around Marienplatz at your own pace, spend time in the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s historic food market, or simply rest before the trip’s final chapter. This is the day to slow down rather than sightsee.

Staying overnight nearby, rather than making the standard rushed day trip from Munich, means seeing the castle in early morning light before the tour buses arrive, a genuinely different experience from the version most visitors get.
