There are places that make you feel genuinely small in the best way possible, and the Amazon rainforest is one of them. At Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, that sense of awe is built into the architecture of your entire stay.

Sitting on the left bank of the Madre de Dios River, adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve in what is known as the Biodiversity Capital of Peru, this eco-luxury lodge offers 35 thatched-roof cabañas set within a 17,000-hectare private ecological reserve. It was named by National Geographic Traveller magazine as one of the world’s 25 best eco-lodges in 2013, and its credentials as a serious conservation property are woven into everything, from the naturalist guides to the organic bath products.

Getting here is part of the adventure. A short flight from Cusco takes you to Puerto Maldonado, where you check in and transfer to the jetty for a 45-minute boat journey along the Madre de Dios River to the lodge. From that moment, the forest takes over.

The excursion programme covers everything from the Canopy Walkway suspended 95 feet above the forest floor to canoe trips into the Tambopata National Reserve, night walks, and twilight river rides. All activities are planned and personalized based on your length of stay and interests, with expert naturalist guides throughout.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica is the definitive proof that “luxury” and “rainforest” are indeed compatible concepts.

Accommodation

Superior Cabanas

38 m2 / 408 ft2 | Twin beds | High thatched-palm roof | Screened hammock lounge

All 35 cabañas are inspired by the design and building traditions of the Ese’Eja people, the indigenous community of the Tambopata region. Constructed from natural materials with high thatched-palm roofs, each is a considered balance of rainforest authenticity and real comfort.

Every cabaña comes with 100% cotton sheets, hypoallergenic pillows, plush bathrobes, and Andean rubber slippers, warm-water showers, and ecologically friendly toiletries. Kerosene lamps, citronella candles, and umbrellas are provided as standard.

Every cabaña also has a screened siesta lounge with hammocks. After a morning in the rainforest, it is the single best feature of the stay.

The lodge operates on low-impact electricity to minimize its carbon footprint, with power available at set hours during the day.

Superior Rio option with a river view also available.

Tambopata Suite

King or twin beds | Open bathroom concept | Private covered terrace with plunge pool | Outdoor shower | 78 sq m

The top-tier option at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, and one that genuinely earns the designation. Set in an Ese’Eja-style wooden cabaña with a tall fishtail-palm rooftop, the Tambopata Suite has a graceful canopy mosquito net, double basins, and a separate shower and toilet.

The private covered terrace with plunge pool and sunbathing chairs is a remarkable place to sit at dusk as the forest changes its sound entirely. The screened siesta lounge with hammocks completes a space that feels genuinely secluded at the edge of the jungle.

Dining

The lodge restaurant serves dishes prepared from fresh, locally sourced ingredients that draw on the tropical produce of the surrounding Amazon.

Meals work around the rhythm of the day: breakfast from 5 am for those heading out on early excursions, lunch through the afternoon, and dinner running until 10 pm.

A complimentary Tea Time featuring Inkaterra’s own award-winning black tea runs each afternoon and is one of the small rituals of the stay.

The bar carries national and international spirits and runs a cocktail hour each evening. There is no better hour to be on the riverbank.

Dining

Wellness

The ENA Spa sits on the banks of the Madre de Dios River, facing Rolin Island. It is a position chosen as much for its sunsets as for its seclusion.

Treatment menus combine classic therapies with ingredients drawn from Amazonian botanicals. All products are 100% natural and derived from local botanical extracts.

Treatments include deep-tissue massage, hot or cold-stone therapies, exfoliation with Ungurahui palm, facial hydration, reflexology, foot therapy, and a dedicated Amazon purification treatment. The signature spa fragrance, Amazonia, is a blend of local essences: sangapia, palm trees, ferns, and ficus.

Experiences

The excursion programme is what sets Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica apart. Activities are planned and personalized for each stay, with expert naturalist guides throughout. Many are included in the room rate.

The Inkaterra Canopy Walkway is the signature experience: a network of towers, bridges, and platforms suspended 95 feet above the forest floor. The adjacent Anaconda Walk continues along a 200-meter wooden bridge over the wetlands below. Lake Sandoval, reached by motorized canoe into the Tambopata National Reserve, is home to the endangered giant river otter, red howler monkeys, and macaws.

After dark, the Rainforest by Night walk and the Twilight River boat ride reveal an entirely different ecosystem. 540 bird species have been inventoried on hotel grounds for those who come specifically for the birdwatching.
