At a glance
Few destinations handle the combination of adventure and indulgence as well as Peru does. The Sacred Valley opens up like a geography lesson in superlatives: the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu floating above the clouds, terraced mountainsides falling away to the Urubamba River, and Andean light that makes everything look like it was lit for a film. Then, four hundred miles to the northeast, the Amazon begins: a world so dense, so alive, and so disarmingly beautiful that the most common response to arriving is silence.
This twelve-day journey moves through three distinct regions of Peru. It starts in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, now a city of baroque churches built on Inca foundations and a serious restaurant scene anchored by some of the best cooking in South America. It continues into the Sacred Valley, where the Rio Sagrado hotel sits on the banks of the Urubamba River and makes a compelling case for slowing down.

After Machu Picchu and a night at Sanctuary Lodge, which sits directly at the citadel gate, the trip pivots entirely, trading altitude for the Amazon Basin and Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica: a thatched-cabin lodge set within a 17,000-hectare private ecological reserve on the Madre de Dios River.
Our team arranges every element, from private guides and lodge reservations to Vistadome train carriages and entry permits, and handles the logistics that would otherwise take months to coordinate alone.

Day by day
This is a sample plan, not a fixed departure. Days can be added, removed or reordered, and almost every client changes something. Prices are an entry-level guide; your quote will be exact.
Days 1-2: Cusco
Cusco is one of the highest cities in the Americas at 11,000 feet, and the altitude is noticeable on arrival. The first day here is deliberately unhurried.
Two hotels work well as a base here, and both rank among the finest in the city. Monasterio is a converted 16th-century seminary built around a stone courtyard, with a chapel still intact and rooms that keep fireplaces burning at altitude even in summer. Palacio Nazarenas is the more contemporary of the two: a former Inca palace and colonial convent converted into 55 suites, with the only heated outdoor pool in Cusco. Both sit within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas. Our team can advise on which suits your travel style or discuss both as part of a longer Cusco stay.
A slow first day is the right call. The acclimatization is real, and the itinerary is built around it: a gentle afternoon walk through the San Blas artisan quarter, a first meal at one of Cusco’s exceptional restaurants, and an early evening. By day two, the city opens up properly. The Qorikancha temple complex, once the most sacred site in the Inca Empire and now half-absorbed into a 16th-century Dominican church, is a short walk from both hotels and one of the more remarkable architectural collisions in the Americas. The Sacsayhuaman fortress, its massive stone blocks fitted without mortar to tolerances that still confound engineers, is best done with a private guide who can give the site proper context.
Cusco has a genuine gay-friendly bar and nightlife scene, concentrated around the Plaza Regocijo area, and the city’s character as an internationally visited destination means same-sex couples move through it without difficulty.
Days 3-4: The Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley stretches northwest of Cusco along the Urubamba River, a broad, fertile corridor of Inca ruins, traditional markets, and farming communities that has changed less in the past five centuries than almost anywhere in the Andes. The drive in takes around an hour and a half, and the shift in altitude, down to around 9,500 feet, is immediate and welcome.
Rio Sagrado sits on the river’s edge just outside Urubamba, in a setting of mountain views and valley quiet. Resembling an Andean village, the resort’s rooms and suites are spread across the property, with the Urubamba below and the terraced slopes of the Sacred Valley on all sides. The spa uses local botanicals and traditional techniques, and the pool, open-air and heated, overlooks the river.
Private guided visits to the market at Pisac and the fortress at Ollantaytambo can be timed to avoid tourist traffic entirely, making an already extraordinary site feel close to private. An afternoon at Rio Sagrado means the spa, the heated pool, and leaning into the quiet of the landscape.
Day 5: Machu Picchu
The Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes departs from Ollantaytambo station in the early morning. The panoramic carriages are worth it: the journey drops through altitude zones in under two hours, shifting from high Andean scrub to cloud forest as the train follows the Urubamba gorge. From Aguas Calientes, the shuttle bus takes fifteen minutes to the citadel gate.
A private licensed guide navigates Machu Picchu’s different sectors: the agricultural terraces, the urban quarter, the Temple of the Sun, and the Intihuatana ritual stone. The morning light inside the citadel, when mist is still lifting from the valley below, is the most photographed moment in South American travel for good reason.
The night is spent at Sanctuary Lodge, the only property within the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary itself. Staying here changes the experience completely: the citadel empties in the late afternoon, and the morning of day two belongs, almost entirely, to guests of the lodge. A second guided visit at dawn, with the site near-silent and the cloud still low, is the version of Machu Picchu that stays with you.
Days 6-7: Lima
Most itineraries fly from Cusco to Lima and connect immediately, but this version takes its time. Miraflores Park occupies a clifftop position above the Pacific in Lima’s most polished neighborhood, and a night here reframes the connection as a worthy part of the trip. The hotel’s El Mirador bar looks directly out to sea. Dinner in Miraflores or the neighboring bohemian district of Barranco, both home to some of the restaurants that put Peruvian cuisine on the global map, makes the stopover feel as memorable as the landscapes of the previous days.
Lima is the most developed destination for LGBTQ+ travelers in Peru, with a visible and long-established gay scene in Miraflores and a Pride event that draws tens of thousands each year. The city’s queer nightlife corridor is open, visible, and genuinely welcoming. For travelers who want to extend the Lima portion, the culinary and cultural case for two nights is easy to make.
Days 8-12: The Amazon
The flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado takes less than two hours, and landing in the lowland heat, with humidity arriving before you’ve cleared the gate, is a full recalibration of the senses.
From Puerto Maldonado, a short transfer to the jetty and a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River deliver guests to Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica. The lodge sits within its own 17,000-hectare private ecological reserve, adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve, on the left bank of the river. The 35 thatched wooden cabanas are built in the tradition of the indigenous Ese’Eja people, with high roofs, raised floors, and hammock balconies overlooking the forest. The ENA Spa, an open-air restaurant, and guided excursions are all included in the stay.
Over four nights, the Amazon reveals itself in layers. The Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, suspended 30 meters above the forest floor and running over 340 meters through the canopy, offers a perspective on the ecosystem below that is unlike anything at ground level. Lake Sandoval, a horseshoe-shaped oxbow lake reached by a short forest walk and a canoe, is one of the best places in the Amazon to see giant river otters at close range. Twilight boat excursions on the Madre de Dios pick up caimans by torchlight. Pre-dawn birding walks catch the forest in its most active hour.
The Inkaterra naturalist guides are the lodge’s defining asset: patient, deeply knowledgeable, and attuned to an ecosystem they know intimately. Few luxury lodges anywhere in the world are positioned inside an ecosystem this extraordinary.

Why Book With Out Of Office
Peru is a destination that is transformative when done well and genuinely frustrating when done poorly. The logistics are real: altitude management, advance entry permits for Machu Picchu (which are capped and sell out months ahead), lodge availability at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, and the sequencing of internal flights all require planning that goes well beyond a booking platform.
Our team has direct relationships with every property on this journey: Monasterio and Palacio Nazarenas in Cusco, Rio Sagrado in the Sacred Valley, Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu, Miraflores Park in Lima, and Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica in the Amazon. We handle the permits, private guide coordination, and train reservations that turn a complicated trip into something that simply unfolds correctly. We also know which properties and operators are genuinely welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers, and we travel these routes ourselves.
Good to Know
Best time to visit: The dry season runs from May through October and is the most popular window for the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, with clearer skies and lower rainfall. The Amazon portion at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica is accessible year-round; the wet season (November to April) brings higher river levels and different wildlife patterns. We design itineraries for both seasons.
Altitude: Cusco sits at 3,400 meters (11,150 feet), and the Sacred Valley at around 2,900 meters (9,500 feet). Most travelers experience some effects in the first 24 to 48 hours. Acclimatization time is built into every day of the Cusco and valley portion, and altitude medication is available on request through your pre-departure health consultation. The descent to Machu Picchu (2,430 meters) and the Amazon basin (around 200 meters) brings welcome relief.
LGBTQ+ context: Peru’s major cities have established and visible LGBTQ+ communities. Lima is the most developed for queer travelers, with a concentrated bar and nightlife scene in Miraflores and an annual Pride event. Cusco’s gay scene is smaller but genuine, and the city’s international character means same-sex couples travel through it without difficulty. Our team can advise on specific venues and anything you want to know in advance.
