Skip the coast road and see the Amalfi Coast from the sea, with grottos, coves and a Positano arrival no car can match.
The Coast the Road Can’t Show You

The Amalfi Coast road is one of Europe’s most famous drives and, in summer, one of its most clogged. Many of the things that make this shoreline so remarkable, from its sea grottos and secret coves to the sight of Positano rising from open water, are invisible from the tarmac. On a private boat the whole shape of the day changes, and the coast reveals itself slowly, entirely on your terms.
UNESCO lists the coast for its scenery as much as its towns, and from the sea the view is unbroken: rock walls plunge into the water, a village suddenly swings into sight around each point, and beaches cut off from any road make easy places to drop anchor and swim. Nobody else sets the stops, the commentary, or the clock. Your captain advises; you decide. It’s the Italian day honeymooners picture.
Half Day, Full Day, or Sunset

Charters tend to come in three lengths. Around four hours is enough for the heart of the coast between Positano and Amalfi: you’ll slip past the Fiordo di Furore, duck into the Grotta dello Smeraldo, and take a dip off the Li Galli islands.
Seven or eight hours gives you a long waterside lunch, a wander through one of the towns, and a gentler rhythm overall; it’s the most popular choice because this coast rewards time. Or, keep it short with an hour or two at sunset, setting out late in the day with a glass of prosecco while Positano turns gold.
Choosing Your Boat

For tradition, choose a wooden gozzo, unhurried and perfectly in keeping with the coast. A speedboat gets you further, ideal if your plans are big or your time short, while a motor yacht gives the most space and comfort, best for larger parties or lazy hours at anchor.
A captain, fuel, towels, soft drinks, and prosecco usually come as standard; some boats carry snorkels, and your lunch table by the water can generally be reserved in advance.
The hard part is not finding a beautiful place. It is finding the right one for you.

The stretch that spans roughly 50 kilometres from Sorrento to Salerno holds some of the most photographed coastline anywhere in the Mediterranean.
The Fiordo di Furore, a thin slice of sea squeezed between two rock faces, is among its most dramatic sights and best seen from the sea. The Grotta dello Smeraldo takes its name from its green-tinged glow, as light passes through the water via openings beneath the surface.
Just off Positano, the three small Li Galli islets, privately owned and once the property of Rudolf Nureyev, make one of the loveliest anchorages on the coast.
You can be picked up in Sorrento, Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, or Salerno, wherever you’re based.
Or Arrive in Positano by Sea

The boat can also be how you arrive. Positano, the “Vertical City,” is built into the cliff with no flat ground and hardly any road reaching its centre, so most people arrive by car and walk down steep lanes with their luggage, which is manageable but hardly an arrival. The town has always faced the sea, and coming in by boat takes about as long as the congested summer drive but feels completely different.
Transfers run from around the Gulf of Naples and beyond. From Sorrento it’s 40 to 50 minutes, the favourite for anyone already on the peninsula. From Naples, leaving Mergellina port, it’s around an hour and a half, practical if you’ve arrived by air or rail, and Capri is a similar crossing. From Salerno the route runs the full length of the coast in up to two hours, a panoramic introduction to the whole shoreline. Most transfers include help with luggage and can be timed around your plans or extra stops along the way.
You’ll usually land at the pier on Spiaggia Grande, Positano’s main beach, where hotel staff or porters can meet you, and some larger hotels and villas above the water have their own sea access for docking directly. Smaller boats have limited space, so it’s worth confirming your group size and luggage in advance. All routes depend on the weather, and responsible operators reschedule or cancel at no charge if the sea isn’t safe. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can arrange the boat and a welcoming hotel on the coast.
