The Amalfi Coast lies in the Campania region of southern Italy, stretching along the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula between Vietri sul Mare and Positano. It is one of Italy’s most dramatic coastal landscapes, with steep mountains dropping directly into the Tyrrhenian Sea and towns built into the cliffs above small beaches and harbors.

The best-known destinations are Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, although the coastline also includes smaller towns such as Praiano, Minori, Maiori and Atrani. Positano is the most glamorous and internationally famous, Amalfi gives the region its name, while Ravello sits high above the sea and is known for its historic villas and gardens.

The Amalfi Coast has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, reflecting both its natural landscape and the way its towns have developed around the mountains and sea.

Historically, Amalfi was an important maritime republic and one of the major trading powers of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. That history is still visible in the architecture, churches and old trading towns along the coast.

Despite the short distances between towns, the geography makes travel slower than it looks on a map, which is why careful planning makes such a difference here.

The Amalfi Coast is generally a comfortable destination for LGBTQ+ travellers, particularly at the luxury hotels, restaurants and private experiences we work with.

There is not a significant gay nightlife scene in towns such as Positano, Amalfi or Ravello. The appeal here is much more about hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, boats and romantic experiences than specifically LGBTQ+ venues.

For same-sex couples, that tends to make very little practical difference. The coast attracts an international crowd and high-end hospitality is accustomed to welcoming gay couples and honeymooners.

The atmosphere is also naturally romantic. Private terraces overlooking the sea, candlelit dinners, boat trips and some of Italy’s most beautiful hotels make the Amalfi Coast particularly popular for gay honeymoons and anniversaries.

Travellers looking for more nightlife can combine the coast with Naples or Rome, while those who want privacy and relaxation can spend the entire stay between the hotel, the sea and the smaller coastal towns.

Luxury Travel on the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast has been doing luxury for a very long time.

Many of its best hotels occupy former villas and private estates built into the cliffs, with gardens, terraces and swimming pools overlooking the Mediterranean. Properties such as Il San Pietro di Positano have become destinations in their own right.

Luxury here is often about access as much as the hotel itself. Private boats make it possible to move between towns without sitting in traffic. Drivers can time journeys around the busiest parts of the day, while private guides transform visits to Pompeii, Naples and the surrounding region.

Dining can range from tiny family-run restaurants to Michelin-starred destinations, sometimes within the same day.

The coast also works particularly well for celebrations. Honeymoons, anniversaries, weddings and milestone birthdays all suit the sense of occasion that comes naturally here.

The key is avoiding the mistakes that can make the Amalfi Coast frustrating: the wrong hotel location, too many day trips, badly timed transfers or trying to see every town in one trip.

Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast

Choosing where to stay is one of the most important decisions on an Amalfi Coast trip because each town offers a very different experience.

Positano is the glamorous choice. Its pastel houses tumble toward the sea, there are excellent restaurants and beach clubs, and some of the coast’s most famous hotels are here. It is also busy and expensive, particularly in high summer.

Ravello sits above the coast rather than directly on the water. It is quieter, greener and more secluded, with extraordinary views and some exceptional historic hotels. For honeymoons and romantic trips, it is one of our favourite choices.

Amalfi is more central and works well for travellers who want to explore different parts of the coast by boat or road. It feels more like a functioning town than a resort.

Praiano offers a quieter alternative to Positano, with beautiful sunsets and a more relaxed pace.

For travellers who want space and privacy, we can also arrange private villas or hotels slightly removed from the busiest towns.

Things to Do on the Amalfi Coast

The best experiences on the Amalfi Coast tend to revolve around the landscape, the sea and the food.

A private boat day is one of the highlights. Seeing Positano and the coastal villages from the water gives you a completely different sense of the geography, with stops for swimming and lunch along the way.

Spend time exploring Positano, then visit Amalfi Cathedral and the historic centre of Amalfi. Higher in the hills, Ravello is known for Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, whose gardens overlook the coastline.

Active travellers can walk sections of the Path of the Gods, one of the best-known hiking routes in southern Italy.

Food is another major part of the experience. The region is known for lemons, seafood and dishes built around exceptionally simple ingredients. We can arrange cooking classes, private dining experiences and visits to local producers.

It is also easy to take day trips to Capri, Pompeii and Herculaneum, although we normally recommend leaving enough unscheduled time to actually enjoy the coast itself.

The Amalfi Coast and Beyond

The Amalfi Coast is rarely difficult to combine with the rest of Italy.

Rome is the most natural pairing. High-speed trains connect Rome with Naples, from where a private transfer can take you onto the coast. A few days of history and city life followed by several nights overlooking the Mediterranean makes for a very balanced trip.

It also combines easily with Naples, particularly for travellers interested in food, archaeology and southern Italian culture.

Florence and Tuscany can be added for a longer itinerary, creating a journey that moves from Renaissance cities and wine country to the coast.

For honeymoons, one of our favourite combinations is Rome, the Amalfi Coast and a Greek island, particularly Santorini or Mykonos.

The coast can also be combined with Capri, although we would usually recommend staying overnight rather than visiting only as a rushed day trip.

For a longer southern Italian itinerary, continue toward Puglia or Sicily.

The Amalfi Coast works best as the slower part of the journey, somewhere to finish rather than somewhere to race through.

The Amalfi Coast does not have its own major airport or railway station, which is part of both its charm and its logistical challenge.

From the US

Most travellers from the United States fly into Rome Fiumicino or Naples International Airport. Rome usually offers the widest choice of nonstop long-haul flights.

From Rome, the fastest route is normally a high-speed train to Naples, followed by a private transfer to the coast. Depending on where you are staying, the journey from Naples to Positano, Amalfi or Ravello generally takes around one and a half to two hours.

Flying directly into Naples can shorten the journey when suitable connections are available.

From the UK

Direct flights operate from London and other major UK airports to Naples, particularly during the main travel season. Flight time from London is around three hours.

From Naples, we normally arrange a private transfer directly to your hotel.

For certain itineraries, arriving by private boat can be a much more enjoyable option, particularly when combining Naples, Capri and the Amalfi Coast.
