The Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre are two of Italy’s most popular and luxurious destinations. Both call to mind colourful buildings perched over cliffs and dreamy sunsets. Cinque Terre is located in northwest Italy on the Italian Riviera. The Amalfi Coast stretches along the southern coast in the Campania region. While both destinations are stunning and have many similarities, they’re pretty far apart from each other. It’s a case of contrasting the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre to decide which one is better for you.
If you’re heading to the Amalfi Coast you’ll fly into Naples. It’s well worth taking some time to explore the city itself. Naples is not Florence by any means. It’s a somewhat rough and ready city, but don’t let that detract from its charms. It’s the birthplace of pizza and its origins stretch way back to antiquity. You can head underground and see the roman aqueducts. A day trip from Naples to Mt Vesuvius is also a possibility – as long as you like walking.

You certainly won’t want to miss out on a trip to Pompeii. It’s about 40-minutes on the train to Pompeii from Naples. Seeing the town that My Vesuvius destroyed almost 2000 years ago is quite an experience. The volcano looms over Naples. The devastating eruption buried Pompeii but preserved so much of it intact. It’s just about the only place left on earth where you can go inside a Roman home and see perfectly preserved paintings on the walls of their inhabitants. Paintings often depict strikingly realistic, even modern-looking couples. Pompeii is one of the great bucket list destinations.
If Naples is too rustic for your liking you can stay in Sorrento, a charming little town with a great selection of luxury hotels. It’s also a mere 20-minute train ride from Sorrento to Pompeii. What’s more, you’ll be transferring to the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento. You can arrange a private transfer to the Amalfi Coast or get the shuttle bus from Sorrento’s train station. Be prepared for a sinuous ride over the cliffs. When you can see Positano in the distance you’ll know you’re nearing your destination.
