Iceman, Mystique and Catwoman are LGBT in the comic books, but appear as straight on screen
London based group Shape History has launched a trailer to help encourage the big movie studios to portray LGBT superheroes on the big screen. Citing the fact that in the comic books Iceman, Mystique and Catwoman are LGBT but have been turned straight on the big screen, the social change organisation hopes to see an accurate LGBT portrayal in the near future.
The campaign, entitled #LGBTSuperheroes, is the brainchild of Mike Buonaiuto. He told OutOfOffice.com about what inspired him to create the project.
“Growing up watching superheroes like Iceman and Catwoman I had no idea they were originally written as LGBT in the comic books. I figured someone had to do something about that and raise awareness that equal portrayal is essential and important”.
