Take a trip to the Amazon and explore Brazil through its food and wildlife. You’ll see how chocolate is made at a cocoa plantation, and discover the traditions of an indigenous community that remain unchanged after centuries. You’ll also taste and smell the produce of the Amazon and the bustling Mercado Ver-o-Peso market. This is a great way to get off the tourist trail and see a more authentic side to Brazil.

Day 1: Belem

When you arrive at the airport your driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Belem is the major city of the Brazilian Amazon. You’ll have the day at leisure to relax and explore.

Day 2: Belem

You’ll be taking a tour of the Mercado Ver-o-Peso, a bustling market offering many delicacies from the Amazon. The vibrant colours and aromas lead to a sensory overload. This market has been hailed as one of the seven wonders of Brazil.

Later, you’ll sail to Combu Island over the Guama River. Exploring the Filha do Combu cocoa plantation. If you have a sweet tooth you’ll do well here. You’ll also learn about the intricate process of cultivating chocolate manually.

In the evening you’ll dine at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Belem

Day 3: Ilha de Marajo

In the morning you’ll be driven to the harbour and you’ll to Marajo Island. On the way you’ll be greeted with stunning views of neighbouring islands.

When you arrive at Marajo you’ll take a trip to Soure, a small municipality located at the mouth of the Amazon River. Check into your hotel, have lunch and then head into the Marajo fields to see the diverse flora and fauna. You’ll see monkeys, red ibis and capybaras. As the sun sets the atmosphere is quite spectacular.

Day 3: Ilha de Marajo

Day 4: Ilha de Marajo

You’ll be leaving the tourist trail behind you and heading to a remote fishing village. Here you’ll watch the locals fishing for shellfish.

Then, weather permitting, you’ll sail through the stream on a canoe passing mangroves and arriving at a secluded beach.

You’ll then ride on a buffalo driven carriage to a cooking class, where you’ll make and sample some local delicacies.

Day 4: Ilha de Marajo

Day 5: Ilha de Marajo

Today you’ll be learning about the indigenous Aruan culture of Marajo, discovering the arts and crafts they have made for generations.

Later, you’ll be able to wine and dine on Pesqueiro Beach.

Day 5: Ilha de Marajo

Day 6: Zoo and Botanical Park Emílio Goeldi

You’ll be exploring the Zoo and Botanical Park Emílio Goeldi. Here you’ll see extraordinary flora and fauna, including crocodiles, jaguars, scarlet ibis and otters. The Amazon is home to much of the world’s most exotic nature.

You’ll later be taken back to you hotel and transfered to the airport for your flight to Ilheus. A driver will meet you when you arrive and take you to Urucuca.

Day 6: Zoo and Botanical Park Emílio Goeldi

Day 7: Urucuca

You’ll be travelling through Urucua to Taboquinhas, a small town where you’ll learn about planting cocoa and find out how chocolate actually becomes chocolate. Naturally, you’ll get the chance to try the chocolate!

Day 8: Taboquinhas

The chocolate journey continues. You’ll travel through Rio de Contas and see the work of a community that produces artisanal chocolates.

The rest of the day is yours to enjoy – perhaps a spot of sunbathing on the beach would be in order.

In the morning you’ll be driven along the Maraú Peninsula where you’ll see stunning beaches and lagoons. Spend the day relaxing and watch the sun set.

Day 9: Taboquinhas

Day 10: Marau

Today you’re free to relax on the beach or continue your culinary journey. You can discover more about artisanal chocolate at Barra Grande. Alternatively, you may wish to make the most of the clear blue waters and go snorkelling.

This morning you’ll be driven to the airport for your return flight.
