Is Ethiopia LGBTQ+ friendly?

Full travel guide

In Ethiopia, same-sex relationships are illegal, same-sex marriage is banned and there are no legal protections against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. Equaldex gives Ethiopia an Equality Index of 12 out of 100.

Source: Equaldex, checked 8 October 2026.

Ethiopia is a difficult destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. Same-sex relations are illegal and carry prison sentences, society is deeply religious and conservative, and there is no recognition or protection of any kind.

Visitors do travel to Ethiopia for the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the Simien Mountains and the Omo Valley, and international hotels routinely host two guests sharing a room. If you go, complete discretion is essential: no public affection, no dating apps, and care with what you post.

We would only plan Ethiopia for LGBTQ+ travelers with private guides we trust, and we will always talk through the realities first. For many couples, Rwanda or Botswana offer a more relaxed way to experience the region.

Rights and recognition 12/100
Homosexuality Illegal imprisonment as punishment
Gay Marriage Banned
Discrimination No protections
Employment Discrimination No protections
Adoption Illegal
Changing Gender Illegal

About Ethiopia

Is Ethiopia LGBTQ+ friendly?

In Ethiopia, same-sex relationships are illegal, same-sex marriage is banned and there are no legal protections against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. Equaldex gives Ethiopia an Equality Index of 12 out of 100.

When is the best time to visit Ethiopia?

October to March is the best time to visit Ethiopia, during the dry season, when the highlands are green after the rains and days are mild (around 20–25°C in Addis Ababa and Lalibela). Meskel in late September and Timkat in January are spectacular times to visit, while the main rains fall from June to September.

Can my trip to Ethiopia be tailor-made?

Yes. Everything we plan is tailor-made. Our suggested Ethiopia itineraries are starting points: your specialist shapes the route, the hotels, the pace and the length around your dates and preferences.
