Two countries, three cities, and a pace that leaves room to enjoy them. This nine-day trip pairs the two great capitals of the northern Baltic, Stockholm and Helsinki, with Tampere, the lake town that is Finland’s emerging favourite.
You start with three nights in Stockholm, a city built across fourteen islands, then fly the short hop east to Helsinki, calmer and more Baltic in feel, with a grand old hotel to come home to and Tallinn an easy ferry away.
The trip ends in Tampere, on a neck of land between two lakes, where the plan is mostly sauna, swimming and slowing down.
It is a trip with a lot of eating in it: Nordic food tours in both capitals, reindeer and herring and schnapps, long breakfasts and lakeside dinners.
Guides, transfers and priority access are all arranged, so you spend your time at the table or on the water rather than in a queue.
Both Sweden and Finland rank among the most relaxed and welcoming countries in the world for LGBTQ+ travellers. Come to eat well, swim in cold lakes, and let someone else handle the logistics.

Day 1-4 Stockholm
Three nights in Stockholm, based at Ett Hem, a converted townhouse in leafy Östermalm run more like a private home than a hotel, with breakfast in the conservatory. T
he days mix the cultural and the indulgent: a guided loop around Djurgården, the green island that holds the ABBA Museum and the Vasa, a private Nordic food tour through the city’s markets and cafés, and priority-access time inside the Royal Palace without the lines.
Day 4-7 Helsinki
A short flight brings you to Helsinki and three nights at Hotel Kämp, the grand 1887 hotel on the Esplanade that has hosted most of Finland’s history since.
Tour the cathedral and the harborside Market Square, graze your way through a Finnish food tour, smoked reindeer, herring and a little schnapps, and look in at the Old Market Hall, trading on the waterfront since 1889.
With a free day in hand, you can take the fast ferry across the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn and its medieval old town, about two hours each way.
Day 7-9 Tampere
Finish with two nights in Tampere, the lakeside city Finns rate and most outsiders miss. You stay at Lapland Hotels Tampere, a cheerful nod to the far north with reindeer touches and heavy blankets, no Arctic flight required.
A walking tour covers the old red-brick mills and the town’s industrial past, and you climb the Pyynikki Observation Tower for the view over both lakes, with a doughnut from the café at the bottom, a local institution.
The real reason to come is the water: a guided paddle and wild swim across the lakes, with stops at a sauna or two. Tampere calls itself the sauna capital of the world, and on this evidence it has a case.
