Crete is one of our favorite Greek islands to explore. In the west, Chania wraps Venetian and Ottoman history around a working harbor. Inland, villages, olive groves and traditional food still shape the island’s identity. Further east, Knossos tells the Minoan story before the landscape opens out again around Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Spinalonga.
This seven-day itinerary takes you across that range rather than keeping you in one corner of the island.

Begin in Chania, where Venetian, Ottoman and Greek influences are still visible throughout the old town and harbor. You will explore privately with a guide, then head into the countryside for a hands-on cooking experience in an 18th-century olive mill, preparing traditional Cretan dishes using local ingredients.
From Chania, drive east across the island, stopping at Knossos for a privately guided visit to Crete’s most famous Minoan archaeological site before continuing to Agios Nikolaos.
The final part of the trip is deliberately slower. From Agios Nikolaos, visit Spinalonga, the fortified island later used as one of Europe’s last leper colonies, then spend your remaining time between the hotel, the coast and nearby Elounda.
What makes this itinerary work is the contrast. In one week, you get old towns, archaeology, Cretan food, a proper road journey across the island and time by the sea, without spending half the trip moving between airports and ferries.
Everything can be tailored around you, including hotel choices, private guides, transport and how much time you want to spend exploring versus doing very little at all.
Day by day
This is a sample plan, not a fixed departure. Days can be added, removed or reordered, and almost every client changes something. Prices are an entry-level guide; your quote will be exact.
Day 1: Welcome to Chania
Arrive in Chania, on Crete’s western coast, where your private driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel.
Keep the first day easy. Settle in, spend some time by the pool or beach, or head into Chania for your first look at the old town and harbor.
Day 2: Discovering Chania’s Old Town
Meet your private guide for a morning exploring Chania’s old town.
Crete has been ruled by a long list of powers, and Chania wears that history openly. Venetian buildings, Ottoman architecture, Greek churches and the old harbor all sit within a relatively compact center, making this one of the best places on the island to understand how its history fits together.
The rest of the day is free for lunch, shopping or simply wandering around at your own pace.
Day 3: A Culinary Adventure in Chania
Leave Chania for a traditional village and an 18th-century olive mill, where you will spend the day learning how to cook Cretan food.
Using local produce, olive oil and herbs, you will prepare a selection of traditional dishes before sitting down to eat what you have made.
It is a much better introduction to Cretan cooking than simply ordering from a hotel menu, and gives you time outside the island’s main tourist centers.
Day 4: Journey to Agios Nikolaos
Collect your rental car and begin the journey east across Crete.
Along the way, stop at Knossos for a private guided tour. The palace complex is closely associated with the Minoan civilization, which flourished on Crete thousands of years before classical Athens reached its height.
Having a guide here makes a considerable difference. Knossos is sprawling and heavily reconstructed in places, so understanding what you are actually looking at adds far more than simply walking around it alone.
Afterward, continue east to Agios Nikolaos and check into your hotel.
Day 5: Exploring Spinalonga Island
Travel by boat to Spinalonga, a small fortified island just off the coast.
Its history is unusually layered. The Venetians fortified the island in the 16th century, and centuries later it became home to one of Europe’s last leper colonies.
Explore the island with a guide before returning to Agios Nikolaos for the afternoon.
Day 6: Leisure in Agios Nikolaos
There is no fixed plan today. Stay at the hotel, spend time on the beach, or head over to Elounda for lunch and a walk along the waterfront.
After several days of sightseeing, this is simply a chance to enjoy the coast without a schedule.
Day 7: Farewell to Crete
After breakfast, drive to Heraklion Airport, return your rental car and depart Crete.
