Explore the glowworm caves of Waitomo, walk the rolling hills of Hobbiton, and spend time in Rotorua, where geothermal waters and Māori culture shape daily life. In the South Island, the landscape opens up dramatically. Aoraki / Mount Cook dominates the horizon, vineyards stretch across Central Otago, and a scenic flight delivers you into the vast stillness of Milford Sound.

Day 1: Arrive in Auckland

On your first day in New Zealand, you arrive in Auckland, a waterfront city shaped by volcanic landscapes and maritime life. After landing, you’ll settle into Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour, set directly along the marina and within easy reach of cafés, galleries, and harborside walks. The remainder of the day is intentionally unstructured, allowing you to ease into the journey at your own pace. Take a gentle stroll along the boardwalk, pause for a coffee overlooking the water, or simply rest after your travels. Auckland’s energy is relaxed rather than hurried, offering a calm and welcoming introduction to New Zealand. As evening falls, the city lights shimmer across the harbor, quietly marking the beginning of a thoughtfully paced journey.

Day 1: Arrive in Auckland

Day 2: Waiheke Island

On your second day, you cross the harbor by ferry to Waiheke Island, known for its vineyard-covered hills and coastal calm. Despite being just a short distance from the city, the island feels pleasantly removed from Auckland’s pace. You’ll visit boutique wineries set above sweeping bays, where tastings are paired with expansive views and a slower rhythm of life. A relaxed vineyard lunch offers time to linger and take in the surroundings. In the afternoon, return to Auckland by ferry, watching the skyline gradually reappear across the water. The evening is at leisure, with time to enjoy the waterfront or dine at your own pace near the hotel.

Day 2: Waiheke Island

Day 3: Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo and Hobbiton

On your third day, you depart Auckland and journey south through the Waikato countryside, where rolling farmland and open skies set a tranquil tone. Your first stop is Waitomo, home to its famous glowworm caves. Here, you’ll drift quietly through limestone caverns illuminated by thousands of tiny lights, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that feels both serene and unforgettable.

Continuing on, you visit Hobbiton, where the iconic movie set is woven seamlessly into the surrounding hills. Walking the green pathways and past storybook cottages offers a lighthearted contrast to the morning’s natural wonders. By late afternoon, you arrive in Rotorua, a region shaped by geothermal activity and rich Māori heritage. The evening is at leisure, allowing time to settle in and absorb the distinctive sights, scents, and energy of this remarkable place.

Day 3: Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo and Hobbiton

Day 4: Rotorua

Rotorua offers a deeper connection to both landscape and culture. Begin the day with time at a natural thermal spa, where mineral-rich waters provide quiet restoration. Later, explore a geothermal valley defined by steaming vents, shifting colors, and constant movement beneath the surface. In the afternoon, you are welcomed into a Māori cultural gathering place for an evening centered on storytelling, song, and shared food. This experience is personal and grounded, offering insight into traditions that remain part of daily life. Return to the lodge in the evening with a deeper understanding of the land’s living history.

Day 4: Rotorua

Day 5: Rotorua to Christchurch

Fly south to Christchurch, a city reshaped through resilience and creativity. Following the 2011 earthquakes, Christchurch has emerged with renewed purpose, blending restored heritage with contemporary design. A guided walk introduces the Botanic Gardens and the Avon River, where tree-lined paths and arched footbridges reveal the city’s quieter side. Public art and thoughtful architecture reflect its ongoing transformation. The evening is at leisure, allowing time to explore local dining, enjoy a riverside walk, or relax at Hotel Montreal. This day marks a shift in landscape as the journey transitions from the North Island to the South Island.

Day 5: Rotorua to Christchurch

Day 6: Christchurch to Aoraki / Mount Cook via Lake Tekapo

Travel inland across open farmland toward Lake Tekapo, where striking turquoise waters meet wide, open skies. Pause near the Church of the Good Shepherd, set simply along the lake’s edge. Continue on to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, where rolling plains give way to dramatic alpine terrain and the air turns crisp. Snow-capped peaks rise sharply above glacial valleys, creating a sense of scale that feels humbling rather than theatrical. Check in at The Hermitage, ideally positioned within the heart of the park. As night falls, weather permitting, the region’s dark skies reveal exceptional stargazing opportunities.

Day 6: Christchurch to Aoraki / Mount Cook via Lake Tekapo

Day 7: Aoraki / Mount Cook to Queenstown

Spend the morning exploring the Tasman Valley, shaped by ancient ice and framed by the Southern Alps. Guests may choose an optional boat excursion among floating icebergs on the terminal lake, offering a close-up view of the glacier’s edge. The journey then continues south through high-country landscapes, where braided rivers and wide valleys gradually lead toward Lake Wakatipu. Arrive in Queenstown, set between water and mountains, with a lively yet well-balanced atmosphere. Settle into The Rees Hotel along the lakeshore. The evening is at leisure, with time to unwind, explore town, or simply take in the view.

Day 7: Aoraki / Mount Cook to Queenstown

Day 8: Queenstown and Central Otago Wine Country

The morning is yours to enjoy at a relaxed pace. Options include a lakeside walk, time at the spa, or unhurried exploration of Queenstown. Later, you’ll travel into Central Otago, one of the world’s southernmost wine regions. Visit selected wineries set among golden hills and open valleys, with tastings that reflect the region’s distinct climate and character. A leisurely vineyard lunch offers time to linger before returning to Queenstown in the afternoon. The evening invites a slower rhythm, whether that’s a quiet drink by the lake or dinner in town.

Day 8: Queenstown and Central Otago Wine Country

Day 9: Milford Sound Fly–Cruise–Fly

Today brings one of New Zealand’s most remarkable experiences. Board a chartered flight from Queenstown and watch the landscape transform beneath you, from lakes and valleys to sheer granite cliffs meeting the sea. On arrival, cruise Milford Sound’s calm waters, passing waterfalls that spill from high above and cliffs that rise almost vertically from the fjord. The stillness here feels profound. After the cruise, return by air to Queenstown, seeing the terrain from a new perspective. The journey leaves a lasting impression, defined not by scale alone, but by the quiet power of the place.

Day 9: Milford Sound Fly–Cruise–Fly

Day 10: Queenstown and Farewell Dinner

Your final full day is designed to be unhurried. Choose how you would like to spend it, whether riding the Skyline gondola, browsing local galleries, enjoying a lakeside café, or arranging an optional experience. Queenstown’s setting encourages reflection as much as activity. In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner with fellow travellers. It is a chance to share stories, revisit moments from the journey, and mark the close of a meaningful experience. The atmosphere is relaxed and celebratory, offering a fitting conclusion to days shaped by place, connection, and thoughtful pacing.

This morning, transfer to Queenstown Airport for your flight to Auckland and onward international connections. As you depart, the landscapes and experiences of New Zealand stay with you, not as a checklist completed, but as a journey absorbed over time.
