Is Saudi Arabia LGBTQ+ friendly?

Full travel guide

In Saudi Arabia, same-sex relationships are illegal, same-sex marriage is banned and there are no legal protections against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. Equaldex gives Saudi Arabia an Equality Index of 13 out of 100.

Source: Equaldex, checked 3 October 2026.

Saudi Arabia is one of the most restrictive countries in the world for LGBTQ+ people. Same-sex relations are illegal and can carry the harshest penalties, there is no recognition or protection, and LGBTQ+ expression is not tolerated in public or online.

The country has opened up to tourism quickly, and international hotels in Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla routinely host two guests sharing a room. If you choose to go, complete discretion is essential: no public affection, no dating apps, nothing posted online that identifies you, and particular care for trans and gender-nonconforming travelers.

We will always talk through the realities first, and plan only with private guides and hotels we trust. For many LGBTQ+ travelers, Jordan offers similar desert landscapes and ancient sites in a more relaxed setting.

Rights and recognition 13/100
Homosexuality Illegal death penalty as punishment
Gay Marriage Banned
Discrimination No protections
Employment Discrimination No protections
Changing Gender Illegal

The Law vs Reality: Gay Travel in Dubai

Homosexuality remains illegal in Dubai with severe penalties, yet thousands of LGBTQ+ travellers visit safely each year through discretion and careful planning. There’s even a sizable contingent of LGBTQ+ expats living in Dubai. While UAE law prescribes up to 14 years imprisonment for same-sex activity, enforcement has shifted dramatically since 2015, with no documented arrests of tourists for consensual private behaviour.

The Law vs Reality: Gay Travel in Turkey

Turkey remains one of the most rewarding destinations in the Mediterranean, with extraordinary hotels, private yachts along the Aegean coast and fascinating layers of history, from Roman to Byzantine to Ottoman and beyond. For LGBTQ+ travellers, however, it is not a destination we would currently describe as completely straightforward. Consensual same-sex sexual activity is legal, and LGBTQ+ travellers continue to visit Istanbul, Bodrum, Cappadocia and Turkey’s major resort areas.

The Law vs. Reality: Gay Travel in Kenya

From the vast savannas of the Masai Mara to the shores of Lake Nakuru with millions of flamingos, Kenya is an unbeatable safari destination. It can be something of a minefield for LGBTQ+ travellers, with colonial-era laws criminalizing homosexuality with penalties up to 14 years imprisonment. Nonetheless, thousands of gay travellers visit annually through specialised tour operators who navigate this challenging landscape with remarkable success.
