Homosexuality is regarded as a complex issue in much of Africa, but in South Africa it’s far easier. South Africa is the unofficial gay capital of Africa and you’ll find Africa’s biggest LGBTQ+ community in Cape Town.
Cape Town boasts a vibrant and open LGBTQ scene centered in lively neighborhoods like De Waterkant. Find buzzing nightclubs, cafes, beaches, and cultural events catering to the LGBTQ community. Cape Town prides itself on diversity and self-expression.
Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2006, and LGBTQ+ people are protected from discrimination by the constitution. However, negative social attitudes can persist in some rural areas of South Africa, so it’s wise to be cautious when heading outside of major cities.
Chitwa Chitwa combines classic African chic and modern European design. It overlooks one of the biggest lakes in Sabi Sand, a popular spot for the local wildlife. You’ll be able to relax in your lodge and watch the animals drinking from the lake.
The Lion Sands lodges are in the only reserve that gives you access to the Sabie River. From the Lion Sands Narnia Lodge shapes like an opulent tree house to the River Lodge located on the banks of the Sabie River, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better setting for your safari. Some of the lodges come with private pools. Others are comprised of separate rooms connected by wooden walkways.
Londolozi Game Reserve is family-run and a big draw for eco-tourists. There are five luxury lodges to choose from. The Pioneer Camp is the most private and it can host up to 14 guests. Londolozi Varty Camp has ten chalets. The campfire has burned here for eight decades – it’s the symbolic heart of Londolozi Game Reserve. The aesthetic appeal of Londolozi Tree Camp is hard to beat. It has 6 luxury suites and a private plunge pool.
The reserve does no allow day visits. To go on a safari at Sabi Sands you have to be staying in one of the lodges. This gives the park an added degree of exclusivity. The rangers are permitted to drive off the road at Sabi Sands, so you can pursue a leopard into the if you spot one – making for a truly unique African safari experience.
