While the Seychelles is one of the few islands in the Indian Ocean where homosexuality is not criminalized, LGBTQ+ residents still face legal and social challenges that are not experienced by the wider society. Although same-sex activity is legal, there is no recognition of same-sex marriage, and societal attitudes can sometimes be conservative. However, the country has made significant strides in protecting LGBTQ+ individuals, including a legal prohibition on employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, ensuring that LGBTQ+ people are protected in the workplace.
Despite these legal protections, LGBTQ+ individuals in the Seychelles may still encounter societal stigma, particularly in more rural areas where traditional views prevail. Public visibility and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights remain limited, but the country is slowly making progress toward greater acceptance.
