Take the wheel of a Land Rover on estate tracks closed to the public, fording rivers and climbing hillsides above the glens.
Terrain Built for Land Rovers

Highland Perthshire packs some of Scotland’s most varied country into a small area: rivers to ford, steep forestry tracks, open hill and private estate land crossed the same way for generations, much of it passable only in vehicles made for such ground.
Your day starts near Dunkeld, where an instructor introduces you to the vehicle and what it can do before the real driving starts. The morning’s water crossings, slopes and slippery surfaces are a deliberate rehearsal, and by midday you leave the practice area for estate land that few outsiders ever see. It’s a brilliant day out for a couple or a group of friends who like a challenge.
Tracks with a Past

The tracks have their own history. Many have been in use for centuries, cut for estate work rather than pleasure, some dating from Jacobite times and repaired ever since with local stone and materials, so driving them links you, in a small but real way, to how these estates have always moved people, goods and animals over hard ground.
These are still working landscapes, not museum pieces, with deer management, forestry and land care carrying on around the routes, which is why access depends on landowners’ permission rather than a public right of way.
Why a Private Day

These tracks need both permission and real off-road skill, which keeps numbers naturally small. Privately, the pace, route and stops are set around your group alone rather than shared with strangers tackling the same obstacles, and your guide can change the afternoon to suit the weather, the wildlife or simply how much driving you want.
The land rewards that unhurried pace: golden eagles circle above some of the higher estates and deer are almost always nearby, and going privately gives you time to stop and watch.

The morning hones your skills on a purpose-built course of water splashes, rock crawls, log crossings and axle-twisting ruts that show what the vehicle, and you, can do, your instructor staying close and adapting to your confidence. In the afternoon you head onto the estate itself, and everything changes: forest tracks open onto bare hillside, river crossings test machine and nerve alike, and the true scale of the land becomes clear in a way no road allows. You might ford shallow burns beneath the pines, climb to a sudden view over a loch or cross high ground where the only movement is deer scattering at the sound of the engine.
Wildlife is a bonus, with red squirrels on the lower tracks, deer on the open hills and raptors on the high thermals; nothing is guaranteed on wild land, but a private pace makes sightings far likelier. Lunch comes straight from the vehicle, spread on the tailgate somewhere chosen for the view, a riverbank, a high point above the glen or a clearing deep in the estate far from anyone, simple, good food in a place you’d struggle to reach any other way.
Arranged for You
Out Of Office books the day with specialist off-road operators, securing private access to estates closed to general visitors and matching the route and pace to your experience, with vehicle, instructor and lunch spot planned ahead and transfers included. By the end, the Highlands feel less like scenery seen through glass than ground you’ve crossed yourself, river by river and hill by hill. Sea Kayaking into Scotland’s Coastal Caves with a Private Guide
Launching from the Shore You set off straight from the beach, the kayak gliding into the water. Ahead, the coast climbs in layers of rock pierced by dark openings the sea has carved slowly over centuries, and from water level everything grows: the cliffs taller, the sea nearer, cave mouths appearing out of nowhere. You wait for the swell to settle, then ease forward, guided by experience rather than speed.
