Malta is one of the easiest destinations in the world to travel to as an LGBTQ+ person, and that is not a qualified statement. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2017, adoption rights are equal, and the country has ranked first on ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map, the continent’s most authoritative measure of LGBTQ+ legal equality, multiple times. Anti-discrimination protections are among the strongest in Europe, and gender identity legislation is considered a model internationally.

What that translates to in practice is a destination where LGBTQ+ travelers can be entirely themselves without calculation or adjustment. Valletta has an established and lively gay scene, particularly around the bars and clubs of the city center, and Malta Pride in September draws a significant international crowd.

Outside the capital, the relaxed social culture of the islands means that same-sex couples will find the same warmth and hospitality as any other visitor, in restaurants, hotels, and everyday interactions across the archipelago.

How We Book the Trip

Most Malta itineraries run between five and eight nights, which is enough time to cover the main island properly and add a night or two on Gozo without feeling rushed. We typically open in Valletta or the St Julian’s area, where the best hotels are concentrated and the city’s baroque architecture, restaurants, and cultural sites are on the doorstep, before moving across to Gozo for a quieter, more rural counterpoint.

What makes the difference in Malta is knowing where the real experiences sit. The Caravaggio paintings in St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta are among the most important works the artist ever produced, and seeing them properly requires a guided visit with someone who understands their context. The prehistoric temples at Ggantija on Gozo and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum on the main island are among the oldest man-made structures on earth, and the Hypogeum in particular has strictly limited daily visitor numbers, so booking well in advance is essential. Valletta and the Caravaggio Paintings

Valletta is one of Europe’s most rewarding small capitals, dense with baroque architecture, fortified walls, and cultural institutions that punch well above the city’s scale. At the center of it is St John’s Co-Cathedral, which houses two of Caravaggio’s most celebrated works, painted during his time on the island in 1608. The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist is the only work the artist ever signed, and seeing it in situ, in the oratory for which it was painted, is a very different experience from encountering it in reproduction. The Prehistoric Temples

Malta is home to some of the oldest freestanding structures on earth. The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground sanctuary carved into limestone around 3600 BC, predates both Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza. Visitor numbers are strictly capped at 80 per day, making advance booking essential, and the experience of moving through its carved chambers with a knowledgeable guide is unlike anything else in the Mediterranean. The Ggantija temples on Gozo, similarly ancient and considerably less visited, are worth pairing with a day exploring the island.

The Blue Lagoon and Gozo by Private Yacht

The clearest way to understand Malta’s geography and coastline is from the water. A private yacht charter taking in the Blue Lagoon on Comino, the sea caves along the Gozo coast, and the fortified harbors of the main island gives a perspective the island roads simply cannot. Cugo Gran Macina in Senglea occupies a restored 16th century galley repair shed overlooking the Grand Harbour, with some of the most dramatic views of Valletta available from any hotel in the country. For those who prefer a more conventional resort format, the Phoenicia Malta offers grand colonial-era architecture and one of the finest pools on the island.

Getting to Malta

Malta International Airport is the island’s only entry point and is well connected to major US cities via a single connection, most commonly through London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, or Rome. Total journey time from the East Coast runs to around 11 to 13 hours including the connection; from the West Coast, typically 14 to 16 hours. Given the range of European hub options, there is good flexibility on routing, and business class connections are available through most major carriers.

From the UK, Malta is one of the more accessible Mediterranean destinations, with direct flights from London, Manchester, and Edinburgh running to around three hours. British Airways, Air Malta, and Ryanair all operate the route, though for luxury travelers a connection through a major hub with a premium cabin is often a more comfortable option than a direct low-cost service.

Once on the island, private transfers are the standard way to move between the airport, hotels, and the ferry terminal for Gozo. The crossing to Gozo takes around 25 minutes by ferry and is easily incorporated into a tailor-made itinerary.
