Rosselli AX Privilege was Valletta’s first five-star hotel inside the city walls, opened in 2019 after a €15m restoration of a 17th-century palazzo. It sits on Merchants Street in the middle of the baroque capital, a short walk from St John’s Co-Cathedral and the Grand Master’s Palace.
There are 25 rooms and suites, all individual, done in a bold black, white and gray palette against the building’s period bones. The hotel plays down the usual room-category ladder, so even entry-level rooms tend to have a soaking tub, a sauna or a Maltese balcony worth writing home about.
It’s a polished, design-led, adults-first city hotel with a warm LGBTQ+ welcome. The rooftop plunge pool and bar look out over Valletta’s rooftops to the sea, and there’s serious food downstairs, which makes it an easy pick for a couple after a stylish few days in the capital.

Dining
Food is a big part of the pitch here, all under one roof. Under Grain, in the basement, holds a Michelin star for chef Victor Borg’s modern French cooking. Grain Street at ground level is the everyday room, a Bib Gourmand spot built around small plates and sharing dishes with no set order. Up top, the seasonal Over Grain pairs cocktails and light bites with rooftop views. Breakfast is served at Grain Street, and there’s a lounge bar by the courtyard fountain.
Wellness
Wellness here is more personal than resort-style. The rooftop plunge pool is the social heart, a small dip-and-lounge pool beside the panoramic terrace rather than a lap pool, with a compact gym on the ground floor. Several rooms come with their own in-room sauna or spa bath, so a lot of the pampering happens behind your own door. For a full spa, your Rosselli card gets you complimentary access to the facilities at sister hotel AX The Palace nearby.
Location
Location is a real strength. Rosselli sits on Merchants Street in the heart of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Europe’s smallest capital, with St John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grand Master’s Palace and the National Museum of Archaeology all within a five-minute walk. The city’s restaurants, bars and galleries are on the doorstep. Sliema’s ferry is about 20 minutes on foot, and Malta International Airport is roughly 20 minutes by car.
