Cugó Gran Macina Grand Harbour is a five-star design hotel set inside a 16th-century Maltese fortress, with 21 suites above Senglea’s Grand Harbour.
The Macina was a naval fortress before it was a hotel, built by the Knights of St John in the 1550s and used for centuries to haul boats up for repair. After a long restoration, it opened in 2018 as Malta’s first Design Hotels member, and it wears that pedigree well.
There are just 21 suites here, all different, shaped by preservation rules and the building’s odd angles. Vaulted limestone ceilings and original stonework meet black steel, oak and marble, a look somewhere between medieval and minimalist. Most face the Grand Harbour, where superyachts line the water below the fortress walls.
This is an adults-focused, couples-first kind of place, quiet and design-led, set in Senglea across the water from Valletta. It has an open, LGBTQ+-friendly welcome, which makes it a calm, grown-up base for two travelers who want Malta’s history without the crowds.

Dining
Hammett’s Macina is the in-house restaurant, modern Mediterranean cooking served in a room where the old fortress walls do the decorating. The kitchen leans local, and the bar turns out cocktails built around Maltese flavors, with a knowledgeable team to steer you. Breakfast is unhurried, so build in time before you head out. There’s a proper bar too, which is a good spot for a slow evening drink.
Wellness
Wellness here centers on the rooftop pool, an unheated harbor-facing stretch on the annex roof, with loungers angled across the water to Vittoriosa and Cospicua. It stays quiet and adults-first, made for slow afternoons rather than serious swimming. There’s no dedicated spa, but the hotel arranges visiting therapists who come to your suite for massages, facials and nails, so you can keep the pampering entirely private.
Location
Cugó Gran Macina is in Senglea, the smallest and quietest of Malta’s Three Cities, across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. A ferry links the two in about 15 minutes, dropping you near the Barrakka lift and the noon cannon. Around the hotel you get colorful timber balconies, old door knockers and near-empty backstreets. Birgu and its marina bars are a five-minute walk, and the airport is roughly 20 minutes by car.
