Malta punches well above its size. Spread across three small islands at the center of the Mediterranean, it has been shaped by successive civilizations, Phoenician, Roman, Arab, Norman, and the Knights of St John among them, leaving behind one of the most concentrated collections of historical architecture and archaeological sites anywhere in Europe.
Here at Out Of Office, we truly understand the world you live in, and the world you want to explore. Our attention to detail, exceptional service and deep understanding of both luxury travel and LGBTQ+ travel make us a fantastic choice for those looking for a travel experience where exclusivity meets inclusivity.
Valletta, the capital, was built in the 16th century by the Knights Hospitaller and remains one of the finest baroque cities on the continent.
The prehistoric temples of Ggantija predate Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, making Malta one of the oldest inhabited places in the world. All of this sits within an island you can drive across in under an hour.
The character that emerges from that layered history is distinctly Maltese. English is an official language inherited from two centuries of British rule and spoken fluently across the islands.
The food reflects every civilization that passed through, ftira bread and rabbit stew from the Arab and Norman periods, fresh tuna and swordfish from the fishing traditions of the central Mediterranean, and a coffee culture shaped by proximity to Sicily.
The island produces its own wine, its own cheese, and a honey made from the indigenous Maltese bee that has been prized since antiquity.
Malta is also one of the most progressive countries in Europe for LGBTQ+ rights, and that distinction is not incidental. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2017, adoption rights are equal, and Malta consistently ranks first or near the top of ILGA-Europe’s annual Rainbow Map, which measures legal and policy equality across the continent.

Contact usMalta’s official languages are Maltese and English, the latter spoken fluently across the islands, making it one of the most straightforward destinations in the Mediterranean for English-speaking travelers. The currency is the Euro, and tipping is appreciated but not expected in luxury properties where service charges are typically included. The country operates on Central European Time, one hour ahead of GMT in winter and two hours ahead in summer.
The island’s compact geography works strongly in a traveler’s favor. Valletta, the main resort areas of St Julian’s and Sliema, and the quieter sister island of Gozo are all reachable within 30 to 45 minutes of each other. Private transfers are the standard way to move between locations at the luxury level and are easily arranged as part of a tailor-made itinerary.
Gozo is worth the short ferry crossing. The pace is slower, the clifftop scenery more dramatic, and the boutique hotel offering some of the most characterful on the islands.
EU and Schengen area citizens do not require a visa. Travelers from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia can enter visa-free for stays of up to 90 days.
Malta is one of the easiest destinations in the world to travel to as an LGBTQ+ person, and that is not a qualified statement. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2017, adoption rights are equal, and the country has ranked first on ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map, the continent’s most authoritative measure of LGBTQ+ legal equality, multiple times. Anti-discrimination protections are among the strongest in Europe, and gender identity legislation is considered a model internationally.
What that translates to in practice is a destination where LGBTQ+ travelers can be entirely themselves without calculation or adjustment. Valletta has an established and lively gay scene, particularly around the bars and clubs of the city center, and Malta Pride in September draws a significant international crowd.
Outside the capital, the relaxed social culture of the islands means that same-sex couples will find the same warmth and hospitality as any other visitor, in restaurants, hotels, and everyday interactions across the archipelago.
Most Malta itineraries run between five and eight nights, which is enough time to cover the main island properly and add a night or two on Gozo without feeling rushed. We typically open in Valletta or the St Julian’s area, where the best hotels are concentrated and the city’s baroque architecture, restaurants, and cultural sites are on the doorstep, before moving across to Gozo for a quieter, more rural counterpoint.
What makes the difference in Malta is knowing where the real experiences sit. The Caravaggio paintings in St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta are among the most important works the artist ever produced, and seeing them properly requires a guided visit with someone who understands their context. The prehistoric temples at Ggantija on Gozo and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum on the main island are among the oldest man-made structures on earth, and the Hypogeum in particular has strictly limited daily visitor numbers, so booking well in advance is essential. We handle all of that as a matter of course.
On the luxury side, we know the properties in detail. Malta’s hotel offering has improved considerably in recent years, and the gap between the best and the merely fine is significant. The Xara Palace in Mdina, the Rosselli AX Privilege in Valletta, and Cugo Gran Macina overlooking the Grand Harbour each offer something distinct, and matching the right property to the right client is where our knowledge earns its place.
Valletta is one of Europe’s most rewarding small capitals, dense with baroque architecture, fortified walls, and cultural institutions that punch well above the city’s scale. At the center of it is St John’s Co-Cathedral, which houses two of Caravaggio’s most celebrated works, painted during his time on the island in 1608. The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist is the only work the artist ever signed, and seeing it in situ, in the oratory for which it was painted, is a very different experience from encountering it in reproduction. A private guided visit, arranged outside peak hours, is the way to do it properly.
Malta is home to some of the oldest freestanding structures on earth. The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground sanctuary carved into limestone around 3600 BC, predates both Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza. Visitor numbers are strictly capped at 80 per day, making advance booking essential, and the experience of moving through its carved chambers with a knowledgeable guide is unlike anything else in the Mediterranean. The Ggantija temples on Gozo, similarly ancient and considerably less visited, are worth pairing with a day exploring the island.
The clearest way to understand Malta’s geography and coastline is from the water. A private yacht charter taking in the Blue Lagoon on Comino, the sea caves along the Gozo coast, and the fortified harbors of the main island gives a perspective the island roads simply cannot. The Blue Lagoon itself, with its shallow, luminously turquoise water, is best experienced early in the morning before the day boats arrive.
Malta is not the first destination that comes to mind when European luxury travel is discussed, and that is partly what makes it interesting. It lacks the headline recognition of the French Riviera or the Amalfi Coast, but what it has instead is a concentration of genuinely characterful high-end properties, a cultural offer that most visitors significantly underestimate, and a scale that makes it possible to cover a remarkable amount of ground in a short trip without ever feeling hurried.
The hotel offering has improved considerably over the past decade. The Xara Palace in the medieval citadel of Mdina is one of the most atmospheric properties in the Mediterranean, a 17th century palazzo converted into a boutique hotel with uninterrupted views across the island. The Rosselli AX Privilege in Valletta sits within a 16th century merchant’s house and combines serious historical character with a genuinely strong food and beverage program. Cugo Gran Macina in Senglea occupies a restored 16th century galley repair shed overlooking the Grand Harbour, with some of the most dramatic views of Valletta available from any hotel in the country. For those who prefer a more conventional resort format, the Phoenicia Malta offers grand colonial-era architecture and one of the finest pools on the island.
Beyond the hotels, Malta’s luxury experiences tend to reward those who know to ask for them. Private after-hours access to the Co-Cathedral, exclusive guided visits to the Hypogeum before it opens to the public, sunset yacht charters through the Grand Harbour, and private dining in Mdina’s bastions are the kind of experiences that do not appear in a standard itinerary but that we build in as a matter of course.

Malta International Airport is the island’s only entry point and is well connected to major US cities via a single connection, most commonly through London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, or Rome. Total journey time from the East Coast runs to around 11 to 13 hours including the connection; from the West Coast, typically 14 to 16 hours. Given the range of European hub options, there is good flexibility on routing, and business class connections are available through most major carriers.
From the UK, Malta is one of the more accessible Mediterranean destinations, with direct flights from London, Manchester, and Edinburgh running to around three hours. British Airways, Air Malta, and Ryanair all operate the route, though for luxury travelers a connection through a major hub with a premium cabin is often a more comfortable option than a direct low-cost service.
Once on the island, private transfers are the standard way to move between the airport, hotels, and the ferry terminal for Gozo. The crossing to Gozo takes around 25 minutes by ferry and is easily incorporated into a tailor-made itinerary.
Malta’s compact size means that even the furthest points on the main island are reachable in under an hour, and a private driver for the duration of the trip is something we arrange regularly for clients who want flexibility without the logistics.
