Travel Information for Peru

General Information

Peru sits on the western edge of South America, bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile, with a long Pacific coastline to the west. The country divides into three distinct geographical zones: the narrow coastal desert strip, the Andes mountain range running through the centre, and the Amazon basin to the east. Each has its own climate, culture and character, and a well-planned Peru itinerary can take in all three.

Lima is the capital and largest city, home to around a third of Peru’s population. It sits on the Pacific coast and functions as the arrival point for most international visitors. The city’s Miraflores and Barranco districts contain the best hotels, restaurants and nightlife, and reward more than the standard one-night stopover most itineraries assign them.

Cusco sits at 3,400 metres in the Andes and was the capital of the Inca Empire. The city’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines Inca stonework with Spanish colonial architecture in a way that is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the world. Cusco is the base for visiting Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and the surrounding Inca sites, and typically warrants three to four days at minimum.

The Amazon is accessible from multiple points but most easily from Puerto Maldonado in the south, which offers river lodge experiences within a few hours of Cusco. Iquitos in the north is the gateway to the upper Amazon and accessible only by air or river.

Peru uses the Peruvian sol, operates on PET (UTC-5), and Spanish is the official language, though Quechua is widely spoken in the Andes. English is spoken in luxury properties and major tourist areas. Altitude sickness is a genuine consideration for visitors arriving in Cusco directly from sea level and worth factoring into the itinerary.

Peru LGBTQ+ Rights

Peru does not currently recognise same-sex marriage, though legal protections against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation exist in employment and public services. The legal landscape has been subject to ongoing political debate, and while progress has been slower than in neighbouring Argentina, Brazil and Chile, the direction of travel in the cities is broadly positive.

Lima is the most developed destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, with a visible gay scene concentrated in Miraflores, including bars, clubs and venues that are well established and openly welcoming. Cusco has a smaller but genuine gay-friendly scene, and the city’s character as an internationally visited destination means same-sex couples generally move through it without difficulty. Arequipa and other regional cities are more conservative in character.

For LGBTQ+ travelers staying within the luxury travel circuit, Lima, the Sacred Valley and Cusco, Peru is a comfortable and hospitable destination. Discretion is sensible in rural areas and smaller communities, but within the major destinations and the properties Out Of Office works with, the experience is consistently welcoming.

How We Book the Trip

Peru rewards those who take it seriously rather than rushing to Machu Picchu and leaving. The ideal itinerary starts in Lima, allowing time in Miraflores and Barranco to recover from the flight and experience one of South America’s great food cities before heading into the mountains. From Lima the journey moves to Cusco, where a day or two acclimatising to the altitude allows the city itself, one of the most historically significant in the Americas, to be properly appreciated rather than endured as a logistical staging post.

From Cusco the Sacred Valley opens up, with Inca sites at Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Moray that most visitors rush past on their way to the main event. The Belmond Hiram Bingham train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes is one of the great rail journeys in South America, with observation cars, a bar carriage and the Andean cloud forest closing in on both sides. Machu Picchu itself rewards an early start, arriving before the main crowds to experience the site in the morning mist with the mountains above and the Urubamba river far below.

Out Of Office builds Peru itineraries that make the most of each stage of the journey, selects the right properties in Lima, the Sacred Valley and Cusco, handles Belmond train bookings that sell out months ahead, and times Machu Picchu entry to avoid the peak crowds. For those wanting to extend into the Amazon, we connect the Inca circuit with river lodge experiences that add a completely different dimension to the trip.

Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley

Machu Picchu needs no introduction, but it rewards proper preparation. The lost Incan city sits at 2,430 metres above sea level in the cloud forest, with mountain peaks rising above and the Urubamba river coiling through the valley far below. Arriving on the Belmond Hiram Bingham train from Ollantaytambo, with an early entry timed to beat the main crowds, is a fundamentally different experience to joining a standard day trip from Cusco. The Sacred Valley that leads to it is worth serious time in its own right. The Inca sites at Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Moray are each remarkable, the valley’s luxury lodges are among the best in Peru, and the local markets and textile traditions give cultural depth that Machu Picchu alone cannot provide.

Lima

Lima’s reputation as a stopover city is outdated. The clifftop Miraflores district and the bohemian neighbourhood of Barranco have produced a restaurant scene that ranks among the best in the world, with chefs like Gastón Acurio and Virgilio Martínez putting Peruvian cuisine on a global shortlist that includes Tokyo, Paris and Copenhagen. The Larco Museum houses one of the finest pre-Columbian collections anywhere, the Pacific coastline runs directly below the city’s cliffs, and the concentration of excellent hotels in Miraflores makes Lima a genuinely comfortable base. Most itineraries give it one night. Two or three repays the effort significantly.

The Amazon

Peru’s Amazon is accessible from multiple points, but the southern gateway around Puerto Maldonado offers the remarkable advantage of being a short flight from Cusco, making it straightforward to combine with the Inca circuit without significant backtracking. The river lodges here sit inside Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse areas on earth, with guided wildlife walks, canoe trips through oxbow lakes and the extraordinary clay lick at Colpa de Guacamayos where hundreds of macaws gather at dawn. For those wanting to go deeper into the Amazon, Iquitos in the north is accessible only by air or river and offers a more remote and immersive experience.

Luxury Travel in Peru

Peru’s luxury hotel landscape has improved dramatically over the past decade and now includes some genuinely outstanding properties. In Lima, Miraflores and Barranco both have excellent five-star options with direct Pacific views and immediate access to the city’s best restaurants. In the Sacred Valley, Belmond Rio Sagrado and the Sol y Luna resort offer luxury lodge experiences set against Andean mountain scenery that is difficult to match anywhere in the world. Cusco itself has a handful of exceptional boutique hotels converted from colonial mansions and Inca palaces, with Inkaterra La Casona and Belmond Palacio Nazarenas among the finest small hotels in South America.

The Belmond experience extends beyond accommodation. The Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu is one of the great luxury rail journeys in the Americas, and Belmond’s Sanctuary Lodge sits directly at the entrance to the site, the only hotel within walking distance of Machu Picchu itself, allowing guests to visit after the day crowds have left and before they arrive the following morning.

The Amazon lodges in Tambopata have raised their standard considerably, with properties offering genuine comfort in remote settings without compromising the wildlife access that makes the experience worthwhile.

Getting to Peru

From the US, Lima receives direct flights from Miami, New York, Los Angeles and Houston. Miami is the shortest at around five and a half hours, New York around eight, and Los Angeles around eight and a half. LATAM and American both serve the main routes, with Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport functioning as the hub for onward connections within Peru and across South America.

From the UK, Lima is around twelve to thirteen hours from London, with no direct service currently operating. Connections via Madrid on Iberia or via Miami on British Airways are the most reliable options, with Madrid offering a particularly smooth connection and competitive journey times. KLM via Amsterdam is another strong alternative.

Once in Peru, domestic flights are essential for most itineraries. Lima to Cusco is around one hour fifteen minutes and operates multiple times daily. Cusco to Puerto Maldonado for the Amazon is a further forty-five minutes. LATAM operates the main domestic routes and booking in advance is advisable, particularly during peak season when popular departure times sell out.
