At a glance

Ancient pyramids that predate the Aztecs, Frida Kahlo's world in Coyoacan, and Mexico City's LGBTQ+ heart in Zona Rosa, woven into five days.

This trip opens in the historic center, where colonial-era cathedrals and world-class museums sit within walking distance of each other. The Zócalo anchors the district, one of the largest squares in Latin America, flanked by the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, where Diego Rivera's murals trace Mexico's history.

The city's culture and art scene runs through everything here, from the murals and museums of the historic center to the galleries and design studios scattered through Roma and Condesa. Evenings turn toward Zona Rosa, Mexico City's LGBTQ+ district, known for its bars, restaurants, and easy, unhurried nightlife.

A day trip to Teotihuacan brings a different kind of history into view, considerably older than anything Mexico City itself has to offer. The Avenue of the Dead runs between two of the largest pyramids built anywhere in the pre-Columbian Americas, the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon, with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl's carved stone serpents still visible after more than a thousand years.

Back in the city, Coyoacan and Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul offer a more intimate version of Mexico's cultural story. The house is preserved much as she left it, her collection of Mexican folk art still in place, and the surrounding neighborhood, all cobblestone streets and courtyard cafes, is best taken in slowly.

The final days turn to food, recognized by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage, from a guided tour through Polanco's markets to a floating afternoon on the canals of Xochimilco, mariachi and marigolds included.

Day by day

?

This is a sample plan, not a fixed departure. Days can be added, removed or reordered, and almost every client changes something. Prices are an entry-level guide; your quote will be exact.

Day 1 and 2: Mexico City

Arrive in Mexico City, where a private driver takes care of your transfer into the historic center. Your first day is deliberately left unstructured to allow time to adjust to the altitude after your flight.

Check into your hotel and take the rest of the afternoon at your own pace. For those who want to stay close, the hotel’s own restaurant or a quiet afternoon by the pool is an easy way to ease into the trip.

For those ready to explore straight away, a short walk usually leads to Colonia Roma or Condesa, two of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods, known for their tree-lined streets, early twentieth-century architecture, and a concentration of some of the capital’s best small restaurants and coffee shops.

As evening sets in, an early dinner followed by a quiet night is generally the easiest way to arrive, saving the fuller days of sightseeing, history, and nightlife for tomorrow, once the altitude and the time change have both settled.

Day 2: Mexico City

The following day is spent with a private guide through the heart of the city.

The Zócalo, one of the largest public squares in Latin America, anchors the historic center, flanked by the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, where Diego Rivera’s murals cover the main staircase in a sweeping visual history of Mexico from conquest to revolution. A walk down the Aztec ruins of the Templo Mayor, uncovered beneath the modern city only decades ago, adds a layer of history that predates the Spanish arrival entirely.

As evening sets in, Zona Rosa, the hub of the city’s LGBTQ+ life, takes over. Shops and restaurants line the streets by day, giving way to the neighborhood’s well-known gay bars and clubs after dark, with a cocktail at Bar Kinky a fitting way to mark the first full day in the city. Republica de Cuba Street downtown and the upscale Club Guilt in Polanco offer alternatives for a different kind of evening, depending on the mood.

Day 3: Teotihuacán, Frida and Xochimilco

An early start takes you out to Teotihuacán, known to the Aztecs as the place where the gods were created, and one of the most remarkable archaeological sites anywhere in Mexico. A guided walk covers the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, connected by the Avenue of the Dead, along with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and its carved stone plumed serpents, still visible after more than a thousand years.

After lunch, the trip returns to the city for a visit to Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul in Coyoacan, the house where she was born, lived for most of her life, and eventually died, now preserved much as she left it, down to her wheelchair and her collection of Mexican folk art.

The afternoon closes in Xochimilco, gliding along the canals in a traditional, brightly painted trajinera, past floating gardens and flower vendors, with mariachi bands drifting between boats.

Day 4: Mexico City

The final full day turns to Mexico City’s food, recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.

A guided tour through Polanco introduces regional specialties from across the country, from Oaxacan mole to the city’s own take on cochinita pibil tacos, with stops at some of the market’s most established stalls.

For a more hands-on option, a cooking class at Mercado San Juan pairs a professional chef with some of the city’s harder-to-find ingredients, from insects to exotic fruit.

The afternoon is left for shopping along Polanco’s Masaryk Avenue and Plaza Antara, before an evening meal at Dulce Patria, a restaurant known for reimagining traditional Mexican dishes with a contemporary touch.

Day 5: Departure

A private driver takes you to the airport in good time for your onward flight, closing out five days that moved between ancient history, twentieth-century art, and the city’s present-day LGBTQ+ life.
