Los Cabos: Adventure Beyond the Resort

Day 1: Arrival in Los Cabos

Day 2: Diving at Land's End

The Sea of Cortez has long been described as one of the most biodiverse marine environments anywhere in the world, and the dive typically includes sightings of sea lions, who are often curious enough to approach divers directly, along with a wide range of reef fish drawn to the area’s underwater rock formations.

Snorkeling is available as a gentler alternative for those who prefer to stay closer to the surface, with much of the same marine life visible without the equipment or certification a dive requires. The afternoon is left free to recover, with the option of a second, shorter session in the water for those who want more time before the day ends.

Day 3: Whale Watching and the Sea of Cortez

Depending on the time of year, and specifically between mid-December and mid-April, a boat trip out onto the Sea of Cortez offers the chance to see migrating gray and humpback whales, which travel thousands of miles from Arctic feeding grounds to breed and calve in the warmer waters around the Baja Peninsula. Peak sightings tend to fall between January and March, though the exact experience depends heavily on the season and cannot be guaranteed on any single outing.

Outside whale season, the same boat trip shifts naturally toward snorkeling and dolphin watching, with the calmer water on the Sea of Cortez side making for an easier, gentler day than a trip out into the open Pacific. Lunch is taken on board regardless of season, with the afternoon left free for the beach or the hotel pool once the boat returns.

Day 4: Desert Trails

The trip moves inland for a full day spent exploring the desert beyond the resort corridor, either on horseback or by ATV, depending on preference and comfort level. Trails wind through arroyos, the dry riverbeds that fill briefly during the region’s rare desert rains, and past stands of cardon cacti, some more than a century old and among the tallest cacti species in the world.

A private guide leads the way, pointing out the desert’s smaller residents along the route, including caracara birds and, with some luck, the occasional coyote moving through the scrub. A late lunch at a family-run restaurant well off the main tourist routes rounds out the day, offering a version of the region’s food rarely seen from a resort dining room, before the return drive to the coast as the light starts to change.

Day 5: Sailing and Snorkeling

A private sailboat takes you along the coastline for the day, with stops for snorkeling at spots only reachable by water, tucked into coves and rock formations that boats without sail access simply pass by. The pace here is deliberately slower than earlier days in the trip, less about seeking out wildlife or reaching a destination and more about the experience of simply being on the water.

Lunch is served on board as the boat drifts along the coast, and the afternoon can be extended or cut short depending on how the day is going, with no fixed schedule beyond a return to the marina before evening.

Day 6: Cabo San Lucas

The final full day shifts toward the town itself, and the morning is left entirely open, whether that means one more swim, a final dive for those who want to make the most of the water before departure, or simply time back at the hotel to rest after five active days.

As evening falls, a private guide can point you toward Cabo San Lucas’s marina area, home to the region’s small but welcoming gay scene, tucked in among the wider nightlife the town has built its reputation on. Rooftop bars and beachfront restaurants built around the sunset offer a fitting way to close out the trip’s more active stretch before a quieter final night back at the hotel.

Day 7: Departure

A private transfer takes you to the airport in good time for your onward flight, closing out a week built around the water and the desert rather than the resort pool.
