Moment · Bora Bora

Bora Bora’s Lagoon by Private Outrigger Canoe

Paddle out at first light in a traditional va'a with a guide raised on these waters, to manta rays, coral gardens and reef sharks.

The Same Lagoon, a Different Morning

Shallow turquoise sandbanks of Bora Bora's inner lagoon

Bora Bora’s lagoon spreads over 32 square kilometers between the island and its outer barrier reef, from less than a meter deep on the inner sandbanks to more than 30 meters in the reef channel, with 727-meter Mount Otemanu watching over every part of it. It’s why most people come, and how you see it matters more than you’d think.

The standard tour leaves the main pier mid-morning in a motorboat with six to twenty passengers, working through the stingray sandbank, the coral garden, the outer reef and a motu for lunch on a set timetable. The blacktip reef sharks, stingrays, manta rays and reef fish you’ll meet are the same ones a private outrigger reaches. What changes is the pace, where you are on the water, and the depth of knowledge of a guide who grew up here.

The Va’a and the Making of the Lagoon

Traditional va'a outrigger canoe pulled up on a Bora Bora beach

The outrigger canoe, the va’a in Tahitian, carried the ancestors of the Polynesians across the Pacific from Southeast Asia to French Polynesia, Hawaii and New Zealand over about 2,000 years, navigating by stars, swells, winds and the behavior of birds, skills refined over generations on these very waters. The va’a is still in everyday use, and lagoon guides come from families for whom it’s a working boat, not a tourist prop.

The lagoon itself took millions of years to form as Bora Bora’s volcano wore down and sank into the Pacific, leaving the barrier reef to trace its original outline. The motu along the reef are coral islands built from the reef’s own debris, and the inner lagoon between them and the main island is the calmest, richest part of the whole system.

The hard part is not finding a beautiful place. It is finding the right one for you.

Why a Canoe for Two Makes the Difference

Manta ray gliding over a coral cleaning station in Bora Bora's lagoon

To protect the mantas, their cleaning stations in the lagoon are visited only in the morning. Fifteen people from a group boat jumping in together make for a very different encounter than two people slipping in from a private canoe, with a guide who can angle the approach to disturb the animals as little as possible.

The reef manta, Mobula alfredi, feeds on plankton and comes to cleaning stations to be rid of parasites, hanging in the current while small wrasse work over its wings. It needs calm water, the right tidal flow and little disturbance, and a guide who can read the conditions and place the canoe accordingly makes all the difference. The sandbanks shift with the seasons and the coral changes with how much boat traffic an area has had lately, so someone on the water every day for years can steer the morning to where the lagoon is at its best. It’s an easy, intimate morning for a honeymooning couple.

Mantas, Stingrays, Coral and Sharks

You push off early, while the light is low and the inner lagoon is still, a calm that’s gone by 10 am. At the cleaning station, where the current lifts plankton toward the surface and coral below hosts the cleaner fish, mantas with wingspans of up to four meters glide beneath you as you snorkel.

On the stingray sandbank in the middle of the lagoon, southern stingrays gather over white sand, used to canoes and swimmers and moving around you rather than away. The inner reef’s coral garden, too shallow for motorboats, holds plate, brain and staghorn coral, and at canoe pace your guide can point out parrotfish, triggerfish, Napoleon wrasse and moray eels tucked into the formations.

Out at the channel where lagoon meets ocean, blacktip reef sharks circle in the current as the floor drops from the shallows to over 30 meters. From the canoe, with the deep blue of the Pacific beyond the reef, the story of how the island formed is laid out in front of you. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can pair the morning with a welcoming overwater resort.
