Sailing Santorini’s Caldera at Golden Hour on a Private Charter

Santorini’s crescent is what was left when a vast eruption around 1600 BC, one of the largest in recorded history, caused the heart of the island to collapse into the sea. Today a ring of sheer cliffs, up to 300 meters high and banded with ash and pumice, surrounds a flooded caldera where the volcano is still active. Fira and Oia cling to the rim, while inlets, caves and mineral springs line the foot of the cliffs.

Most visitors stay up top, on foot or by car. The finest view is from the water, looking back at the cliffs instead of down from them, in the hour before the sun sinks behind the rim and everything turns gold. The crowds are on the terraces; you’re on the sea with a glass of wine and nowhere else to be.

Stops might include Red Beach, where rust-red cliffs fall straight into clear water, and White Beach, reachable only by sea, its pale cliffs like chalk, or quiet Mesa Pigadia on the south coast, one of its few truly unspoiled corners. At the centre of the caldera rises the dark bulk of Nea Kameni, a volcanic island built by later eruptions, and in the warm, sulfurous hot springs close by you can float somewhere quite unlike anywhere else. You pass the white dome of the Akrotiri lighthouse and the sea stacks that mark the caldera’s mouth.

On shore, a Santorini sunset is a show. In Oia, people stake out spots hours ahead, rooftop bars and terraces are booked months in advance, and the lanes are full by 6:30 pm even in the shoulder season; when the last of the sun disappears, the crowd applauds.

Out on the water it’s quiet and spacious. As you head toward Oia, the sun drops behind the rim and the cliffs shift minute by minute from iron-red to ochre to violet. You anchor mid-caldera with the whole western face of the island in view and, if the sea is calm, swim until the light goes. All you hear is the sail, the clink of a glass, or your captain pointing out a monastery high on the cliffs. Stand at the bow or stretch out on a sun pad, and if a rock face catches the light just so, ask the crew to slow down.

On Board

The right boat makes the day. A catamaran gives you space and stability, with nets over the water at the bow and shaded seats at the stern; catamaran tours are the most popular way to sail, for good reason.
