The Costa Brava, the “wild coast,” runs along northeastern Catalonia up to the French border, and its history is bound up with the water. In the Middle Ages the same sea brought danger as much as fortune: pirate raids shaped fortified towns like Tossa de Mar, whose walls stand right above the beach, placed, as you see from the water, to watch the horizon rather than the land.

In the twentieth century, artists, writers, and thinkers came for its stark beauty and isolation. Salvador Dalí was born nearby and spent much of his life in Cadaqués and Portlligat, inspired by the wind-carved rocks and sharp light of Cap de Creus.

Tourism arrived in earnest in the 1950s, turning fishing villages into resorts, yet long stretches remain little changed, especially seen from the sea, and that mix of development and wildness defines the region today.

Around Cap de Creus the landscape turns almost abstract, the rocks looking sculpted rather than worn, shaped by wind and salt, and the water keeps changing colour even when the boat slows.

A Day Shaped by the Sea

The day unfolds gently. Morning brings the calmest water, ideal for cruising the coast and choosing your first anchorage; midday is for swimming and resting, with the boat giving shade and a steady base; and in the afternoon your skipper may suggest a village stop or one last swim before heading back. You end the day not worn out but content, having seen the coast from its most revealing side.
