Sitges: Carnival on the Catalan Coast

Watch Carnival's night parades sweep along the Sitges seafront in feathers and sequins, until the Burial of the Sardine closes the week.

A Queer Spanish Haven

Sitges is a small seaside town around 40 minutes south of Barcelona, with whitewashed streets, a church on a headland, and a long stretch of beaches. Its LGBTQ+ community has been part of the town for generations.

For one week each February or early March, before Lent, Sitges hosts Carnival. Hundreds of thousands of visitors arrive for the parades, and the town gives itself over to costume and celebration.

It is a long-standing Catalan tradition, and the gay community has made it one of the most theatrical events of its kind in Europe.

The Arrival of the Carnival King

Carnival begins on the Thursday, when King Carnestoltes arrives in town. He is the spirit of the festival, a figure of indulgence before the restraint of Lent, and his arrival sets the tone for the days that follow.

From then on, the town fills steadily. Bars and restaurants stay open late, costumes appear on the streets, and the seafront promenade becomes the centre of everything.

The Rua de la Disbauxa

On Sunday evening comes the Rua de la Disbauxa, the Debauchery Parade. Thousands of costumed participants dance along the route on decorated floats, with choreography, loud music, and a great deal of glitter.

The parade follows the Passeig de la Ribera along the sea and winds into the old town. Sunday has a slightly more relaxed feel than the final night, which makes it a good first experience of the parades.

The Rua de l’Extermini

Tuesday night brings the Rua de l’Extermini, the Extermination Parade. It follows the same route but runs later and feels wilder, with more floats, bigger crowds, and the sense that the week is reaching its peak.

The next day, Ash Wednesday, the Burial of the Sardine, brings Carnival to a close with a mock funeral. It is a humorous, smoky farewell before Lent begins.

How Carnival Became an LGBTQ+ Celebration

Carnival in Sitges is far older than the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Over the second half of the twentieth century, though, the town’s gay community embraced it, and the parades became known across Europe for their costumes, humour, and freedom.

The connection reaches beyond the festival. Sitges founded its first formal LGBTQ+ association in 2001, and the town’s beaches, bars, and hotels have welcomed gay visitors for decades. During Carnival, that history is on full display.

Sitges Beyond the Parades

The days between parades are worth having time for. Cau Ferrat, the seafront home and studio of the painter Santiago Rusiñol, holds his collection of art and ironwork and gives a sense of the town’s artistic past.

You can also walk the old town around the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, sit over lunch by the water, or spend a slow afternoon on the beach, even in winter.

Planning Your Sitges Carnival Experience

Carnival dates follow Easter, so they move each year between February and early March. Hotels fill well in advance, and staying close to the parade route makes the evenings much easier. Costumes are encouraged but never required.

Out Of Office can arrange a private transfer from Barcelona, accommodation close to the action, and dinner reservations through the week. Your LGBTQ+ travel specialist can also combine Carnival with a stay in Barcelona.
