Sitges has been a prominent gathering point for LGBTQ+ travellers since the 1960s, when it first became known as a haven for artists and writers under Franco-era Spain, long before the country’s own laws caught up with the town’s reputation. Its Pride celebration, held each June, now draws visitors from across Europe to a town of some 29,000 residents, a scale that makes it feel considerably more intimate than Pride events staged in major capitals.
The week itself moves between registers rather than staying at one pitch throughout. Days bring pool parties, boat trips along the coast, and the open-air village stage that runs for the full five days of festivities, with performances ranging from drag to live music, all free to attend.
Evenings shift toward the town’s clubs, among them Bunker, one of the largest in Sitges, alongside boat parties that leave from the harbor after dark. Between the organised events, the town’s own beaches and seafront promenade remain a constant, gay bars and rainbow flags marking out a centre that stays busy from morning through to the early hours.
For travellers who want a change of pace within the week, Sitges offers more than its festival calendar. Day 1: Arrival
Settle into Sitges itself after a transfer from Barcelona Airport. Hotel Calipolis, overlooking the town’s gay beach, puts the parade route and seafront within easy walking distance, and staying locally means the celebrations do not end when public transport does.
That choice of base reflects something deeper than convenience: Sitges’ standing as a queer destination predates Spain’s own legal recognition of LGBTQ+ rights by several decades.
Sitges’ historically welcoming reputation took shape during the later years of the Franco dictatorship, when the town’s distance from Madrid and Barcelona’s more conservative establishment made it a place where a different kind of freedom was possible.
Days 2–3: Pride
The parade itself moves along the seafront before turning into the old town’s narrower streets, trailed by an open-air stage that runs for the length of the festival with performances ranging from drag to live music, all free to attend.
Evenings shift toward the harbor, where boat parties depart after dark, and toward Bunker, one of the largest clubs in Sitges, which hosts themed nights across the week.
A pool party, one of the most sought-after events on the calendar, typically sells out its limited capacity well in advance.
Beyond the organised events, Sitges’ beach culture is a significant part of the week in its own right, with several stretches of coastline serving as informal gathering points from morning through the afternoon.
Day 4: Beyond the Parade
Sitges is a multifaceted destination and rewards a slower day away from the crowds to truly explore.
The Museu Cau Ferrat, once home to the Catalan artist Santiago Rusiñol, offers a different side of the town’s cultural history, tracing back to the bohemian circle that first drew artists and writers here in the late nineteenth century, and the clifftop walk past the parish church remains one of the best views on the Catalan coast.
That history still shapes the town today: the welcome extended to LGBTQ+ visitors here is longstanding rather than a recent accommodation to tourism, a distinction worth noting for travellers who have experienced destinations where the reception feels more performative than genuine.
