From Paris Pride in June to the Chéries-Chéris film festival in November, France has LGBTQ+ events worth planning a trip around all year.
France has long been one of Europe’s most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers, and its event calendar gives you good reason to visit in almost any season.
June brings two of the country’s biggest Pride celebrations — Paris and Montpellier — while May puts Cannes on the map for queer cinema and unabashed glamour.
Come November, Paris hosts one of the continent’s finest LGBTQ+ film festivals, and January sees the French Alps turn over an entire ski village to Gay Ski Week. Whenever you go, there’s something worth planning around.

Paris Pride (June)
The Grande Parade des Fiertés takes place on the last Saturday of June, drawing around 700,000 people through the streets of central Paris from Montparnasse to Place de la République. It’s one of the largest Pride marches in Europe and the city throws itself into it fully, with bars, clubs, and pop-ups running all week around the parade.
The Marais is the traditional gay district, and while it can get crowded, it’s the right place to be in the days leading up to the march. Book accommodation well ahead — the neighbourhood fills quickly and prices spike.
The march has roots going back to 1977, making it one of the oldest Pride events in Europe. It gained real momentum in 1981, the year François Mitterrand was elected and France equalised the age of consent — a march of around 10,000 people took place that April, and the event has grown every decade since. T
hrough the AIDS crisis, the campaign for civil partnerships in the 1990s, and the fight for marriage equality won in 2013, the Marche des Fiertés has tracked the full arc of LGBTQ+ rights in France.

Cannes Film Festival (May)
Few events anywhere in the world generate the kind of spectacle that descends on Cannes each May. The Film Festival transforms a small Riviera city into the most photographed place on earth for two weeks, drawing film industry figures, international press, and a vast crowd of people who have no industry credentials whatsoever and come purely for the atmosphere.
The Croisette becomes a stage in itself, the hotels, the yachts, the restaurants spilling onto terraces in the evening light. For LGBTQ+ travellers, the pull is real and well-founded. Queer cinema has long had a serious presence at Cannes, with films exploring gay, lesbian, and trans stories regularly competing for the Palme d’Or and earning some of the festival’s most passionate responses. But the draw goes beyond the programme.
Cannes in May has a particular energy that the LGBTQ+ community has always gravitated toward: unapologetically glamorous, international, and built around the idea that self-presentation is its own art form. People travel from across the world to be here during the festival, many of them with no intention of seeing a single film.
The hard part is not finding a beautiful place. It is finding the right one for you.

Chéries-Chéris Film Festival, Paris (November)
Paris hosts one of Europe’s best dedicated LGBTQ+ film festivals each November. Chéries-Chéris has been running since 1994, screening features, shorts, and documentaries from across the world, with a programme that tends to prioritise work that wouldn’t find a home at more mainstream festivals.
The Q&As and events built around the screenings give it a genuinely communal feel, the kind of festival where the audience is as engaged as the filmmakers. November is also one of the better times to be in Paris. The summer crowds are long gone, the city settles back into its own rhythms, and the combination of shorter days and excellent indoor culture makes it a natural fit for a week built around cinema.
The Marais is quieter, the restaurants easier to get into, and the whole visit feels less like a landmark trip and more like something the city is letting you in on.

Montpellier Pride (June)
Montpellier’s Pride march takes place in mid-June, just ahead of Paris, and offers a different pace entirely. The city has one of the most established LGBTQ+ scenes in the south of France, and Pride here feels genuinely local rather than touristic. The old city is beautiful and the weather is reliably warm, making it a strong alternative for those who want to skip the scale of Paris.
Planning Your Trip
Paris Pride in late June pairs well with a few days in Provence or on the Riviera afterward, when the south is at its most alive. Cannes in May works naturally as part of a wider Côte d’Azur trip. And if winter skiing appeals, Valloire can be combined with time in Lyon or Geneva on either side.
