Legal Requirements: Making it Official
The good news? You don’t need to be a Portuguese resident to marry in Portugal. However, there are specific steps you’ll need to follow. You’ll need valid passports, birth certificates that have been apostilled and translated into Portuguese, and a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage that’s also apostilled and translated. If either of you has been married before, you’ll need divorce decrees or death certificates of former spouses, all properly apostilled and translated.
The process begins with submitting your intent to marry at a Portuguese Civil Registry Office or Portuguese consulate in your home country at least 30 days before your wedding. Your intention to marry will be published for public notice, and there’s typically a 30-day waiting period, though this can sometimes be waived. The ceremony itself must be conducted by a civil registrar or authorised celebrant.
