Thailand, Your Way: Six Journeys Through One Remarkable Country

From honeymoons in Chiang Mai to island-hopping in the Gulf of Thailand, discover six ways to experience Thailand on your own terms.

The best trips to Thailand tend to start with a single decision: resist the urge to see everything. The country is large, varied, and rewarding when you commit to one version of it rather than attempting all of them.

These six itineraries are built around that idea. Each one is a different lens, each one designed to go deeper and get the most out of your Thailand experience.

Honeymoons and Weddings With Substance

Thailand made history in 2024 as the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, and it has been welcoming LGBTQ+ couples long before the law caught up. This 12-day journey is built around that spirit: part celebration, part honeymoon, entirely Thailand.

The route moves through three distinct chapters. Bangkok for the energy and the skyline dinners. Chiang Mai for the ceremony itself, set against the cultural backdrop of the Lanna north, with an authentic Thai wedding ritual, a honeymoon shoot, and a hot air balloon ride over the countryside. Then Koh Samui for the wind-down: beaches, a luxury Andaman Sea cruise, and the particular pleasure of having nothing left to plan.

Same-sex couples are received here with genuine warmth rather than tolerance, and that distinction matters. Thailand has always been one of the most naturally inclusive destinations in Asia. Now it is also one of the few in the region where your marriage carries legal weight.

Eco-Luxury That Goes Beyond Aesthetic

Thailand has a strong case for being one of the most rewarding eco-luxury destinations in Asia, and this 11-day itinerary makes that case properly.

The route covers four distinct landscapes: Bangkok’s riverfront and temple districts, the forested highlands of Chiang Rai in the Golden Triangle, the historic northern city of Chiang Mai, and finally Koh Yao Noi, a quietly exceptional island in Phang Nga Bay that has resisted the kind of development that changed Phuket and Koh Samui.

The properties throughout are chosen for how they sit within their surroundings rather than in spite of them. Low-impact design, locally sourced food, genuine conservation commitments.

It works equally well as a honeymoon, a couple’s escape, or a solo journey for anyone who wants to understand Thailand beyond its most photographed moments. The island end in particular, quiet beaches, longtail boats, limestone karsts rising out of the bay, has a way of making everything that came before it feel even better in retrospect.

Southern Thailand

Most people who come to southern Thailand head straight for the islands. This itinerary takes a different view, moving through the landscapes that sit between and behind them: the long, uncrowded beaches of Khao Lak, the ancient rainforest interior of Khao Sok National Park, and the dramatic limestone coastline of Krabi. Phuket bookends the journey as an arrival and departure point rather than the main event.

The pace throughout is deliberately unhurried. Khao Lak opens the trip gently, with wide beaches, low-rise resorts and optional conservation-led experiences on the Andaman Sea.

The move inland to Khao Sok is where the itinerary surprises most: emerald lakes, jungle trails and limestone karsts that have very little to do with the Thailand most visitors see. Krabi closes things out with island-hopping, coastal scenery and enough wellness-led downtime to make the flight home feel earned.

In Southern Thailand, the crowds are thinner, the scenery is extraordinary, and the slower rhythm of the Andaman Coast tends to get under your skin.

Four Seasons Koh Samui

Islands That Resist the Spotlight

Koh Samui has the airport. Koh Phi Phi has the photos. These three islands in the Gulf of Thailand’s eastern corner have something rarer: the feeling that you found them yourself.

The itinerary moves through Koh Chang, Koh Kood and Koh Mak in sequence, each one quieter and less visited than the last. Koh Chang opens the trip with forested hills dropping to long sandy beaches, waterfalls in the interior and a relaxed coastal pace that sets the tone well.

The boat to Koh Kood is where most people’s expectations shift: widely considered one of Thailand’s most unspoilt islands, it has the kind of soft white sand and clear water that tends to appear on mood boards rather than actual holidays.

Koh Mak finishes things off on a small, genuinely simple island with shallow reefs and very little else demanding your attention.

There is no particular agenda here beyond moving between beautiful places at an unhurried pace. No fixed excursion schedule, no high-density resorts, nothing that resembles a package holiday. It is the kind of trip that is difficult to explain to people who haven’t done it, and difficult to forget once you have.

A Food-Led Route Through Central and Coastal Thailand

Thai food is one of the most complex and regional cuisines in the world, and most visitors barely scratch the surface of it. This itinerary uses food as the primary logic for a journey through central Thailand before finishing on the Andaman coast, and the results are considerably more interesting than the standard Bangkok-beach formula.

The first three days in Bangkok are built around eating and understanding what you are eating. A tuk tuk tour of the night markets, a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya aboard a restored rice barge, and a morning at the Blue Elephant Cooking School where a fresh market visit precedes a hands-on class in the balance of sweet, sour, salty and spicy that underpins the cuisine.

From there the route moves to Khao Yai National Park, which offers a genuinely unexpected detour: Thailand has a small but serious wine industry here, producing what the industry calls new latitude wines, and the vineyard visits are worth the detour on their own terms.

Ayutthaya follows, the former Siamese capital and one of the most atmospheric temple complexes in Southeast Asia, where the food connects as directly to history as the ruins do.

Phuket closes the trip with three nights of coastline and decompression after several days of cultural activities.

Wellness That Is Quietly Transformative

Thailand has long been one of the world’s most compelling destinations for wellness travel, with traditions rooted in ancient practice rather than modern trend.

This 10-day itinerary moves through three carefully chosen properties on the Andaman coast, each one selected for how seriously it approaches the subject, with a structure that lets the pace deepen as the trip progresses.

It begins at The Sarojin in Khao Lak, a five-star property on a quieter stretch of coastline where the opening days are deliberately gentle. Yoga on the beach, bamboo rafting on the river, snorkelling trips out to the Similan Islands if the energy is there. The point is to arrive properly before the journey really begins.

The middle section moves to Kata Noi Beach in Phuket, where The Shore at Katathani offers private infinity pool villas with direct ocean views. It is the kind of place that makes leaving feel like a bad idea, which is exactly the right quality for the midpoint of a wellness trip.

The final five nights are spent at Amatara Welleisure Resort, where personalized programs draw on spa treatments, yoga and Tai Chi in a Bay View Suite setting.
