Step past the curtain into the studios and workshops where the world's most famous circus is dreamed up, rehearsed and built.
Where the Magic Is Made

Cirque du Soleil’s headquarters sits outside Montreal’s historic centre, and from the street it’s surprisingly modest: no grand entrance, no theatrical flourish. Step inside, though, and the size and intricacy of the operation are obvious at once, with studios, workshops and production spaces laid out for work, not show.
This isn’t a performance. There are no seats, no spotlights and no applause. Instead you see the process: movement taken apart, practiced and rebuilt; costumes altered for strength and freedom; sets tested for speed and safety, all in service of live shows performed under intense conditions.
From Street Performers to a Global Company

Cirque du Soleil was founded in Quebec in 1984, growing out of a local street-performance scene into an international institution. It changed what circus could be, leaving animals behind and putting choreography, original music, design and storytelling at the centre. Montreal was key: its bilingual culture, generous arts funding and taste for experiment drew talent from dance, theatre, gymnastics, costume and engineering into one creative model.
Productions now tour and play in residence across several continents, but new shows are still created here, refined in workshops and rehearsals first. The headquarters is both laboratory and archive, and most audiences only ever see its polished final result.

Visits usually begin in the rehearsal studios, where performers train and refine their routines. Rigging points, sprung floors and modular equipment let the rooms recreate conditions on tour, and you’ll see how athleticism and artistry are balanced through endless repetition.
In the costume and wardrobe workshops, garments are made to look spectacular and to survive: tested again and again, with reinforced seams and quick-change mechanisms engineered to work flawlessly under pressure. Then come the set and production workshops, where even the most delicate-looking props are built with industrial precision to be taken apart, moved and rebuilt night after night.
Why It Has to Be Private

These are working spaces, so access is carefully controlled for safety and confidentiality. A private visit, led by someone who understands both the art and the operation, lets you in without getting in the way, and can focus on what fascinates you most, whether that’s choreography, costume engineering or stage mechanics. Visiting during active rehearsals means seeing the company genuinely at work: movements corrected on the spot, designers adjusting materials, directors fine-tuning a scene.
Your Out Of Office specialist times the visit around rehearsal schedules. Afterward, Montreal’s Village, one of North America’s best-known LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods, is an easy evening away, and our Canada guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and practical advice.
