Chile stretches along the Pacific Ocean and part of the Atlantic Ocean. It forms an interesting shape on the map – sort of like Portugal but much longer. The vast Andean mountains stretch along the West Coast of South America and loom over much of Chile, including its capital city, Santiago.

The country was ruled by the Incas until the Spanish conquest of the 16th-century. The Inca’s reign had only lasted for around seventy years. Before they extend their empire to incorporate Chile, it was home to the indigenous Mapuche people. The descendants of the Mapuche still live in Chile, chiefly in the Patagonia region.
In the 1970s, Chile’s democratically elected government was overthrown by Augusto Pinochet. Many thousands of people were tortured and disappeared under his rule.
Since 1990, Chile has been a thriving democracy and one of the most stable and prosperous countries in South America.

Contact usChile’s capital and biggest city, Santiago, is surrounded by the snowy Andes and home to 7 million people. The city has a blossoming food and wine scene. With a growing economy and stable government, Santiago is very much a city on the rise. It’s catching up with its more iconic counterparts in Brazil and Argentina.
The territory of Chile stretches from Easter Island right the way to its base in the South Pole. The climate and topography of Chile are almost schizophrenic. It has the world’s driest desert in the North, vast glaciers in Patagonia and the subtropical climes of Easter Island.
Chile has made notable strides in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, particularly in recent years, reflecting a growing commitment to equality and inclusion. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1999, but the country has seen more progressive changes in the last decade. In 2015, Chile introduced civil unions through the Acuerdo de Unión Civil (AUC), granting same-sex couples many of the same legal rights as married heterosexual couples, including inheritance and healthcare benefits.
In a historic move, Chile legalized same-sex marriage in December 2021, granting full legal recognition and adoption rights to LGBTQ+ couples. This landmark legislation signified a major step forward for equality in a country that has traditionally been conservative on social issues. Chile has also enacted anti-discrimination laws to protect individuals based on sexual orientation and gender identity, with the Anti-Discrimination Law (Ley Zamudio) established in 2012 as a response to hate crimes.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in rural areas where conservative attitudes are more prevalent. However, advocacy groups and LGBTQ+ organizations continue to push for broader protections and greater societal acceptance.
In cities like Santiago and Valparaíso, LGBTQ+ culture is thriving, with Pride events, inclusive nightlife, and a visible queer community. For travelers, Chile offers a mix of natural beauty and urban vibrancy, combined with an increasingly welcoming atmosphere for LGBTQ+ individuals. While there is still progress to be made, Chile’s recent achievements reflect a society steadily moving towards greater inclusivity and equality.
Take a flight from Santiago to Easter Island and discover its mysterious Maoi megaliths. These vast sculptures were carved out of volcanic stone in the Medieval period. No one knows quite why they were built or what purpose they served.
Visit the Atacama Desert to the West of the Andes. This is the world’s driest desert and it looks like the surface of Mars.
Visit the Marble Caves of Chile Chico. Formed over 6000 years by waves lapping against calcium carbonate, the marble caves are as blue as the lake that surrounds them.
Getting to Chile is relatively easy, as the country is well-connected to major cities around the world. The primary international gateway is Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL), which offers direct flights from major hubs in North and South America, Europe, and Oceania. Airlines such as LATAM, American Airlines, Air France, and Iberia provide regular services to Santiago from cities like New York, São Paulo, Madrid, and Auckland.
For travelers coming from Europe or North America, flights to Santiago typically range from 10 to 14 hours, depending on your departure city. Chile’s central location in South America also makes it easily accessible from neighboring countries, with flights to Santiago from cities like Buenos Aires, Lima, and Rio de Janeiro being quick and frequent.
Once in Chile, the country’s efficient domestic flight network makes it easy to explore beyond Santiago. You can travel to the stunning coastal city of Valparaíso, the vineyards of the Central Valley, or the remote wilderness of Patagonia with ease. Whether flying in for a short visit or a longer stay, Chile’s convenient travel connections ensure a seamless journey to its diverse regions.
