This itinerary moves through three of French Polynesia’s quieter islands, each reached only by boat or short inter-island flight, and each rarely appearing on a first-time visitor’s itinerary. It suits travellers who have already done Bora Bora, or who would rather skip it, in favor of a slower, less-photographed route through French Polynesia.

The journey begins on Tahiti, where volcanic peaks meet a coastline still shaped by the island’s original Polynesian settlements. From there, a scenic boat transfer leads to Taha’a, an island with no commercial airport and a fraction of the visitor traffic of its neighbors.

The route ends on Rangiroa, a coral atoll built around one of the largest lagoons in the region, with a marine ecosystem substantial enough to support its own protected reserve.

At Intercontinental Tahiti Resort and Spa, the standout is the Lagoonarium: a private, protected inlet home to ten endangered marine species, open for guided snorkelling directly from the resort. On Taha’a, Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts offers overwater suites and the Royal Beach Villa, both looking out toward Bora Bora’s silhouette across the channel without any of its crowds.

In Rangiroa, the Hotel Kia Ora Resort and Spa has built its reputation on decades of environmental stewardship, sitting directly on the atoll’s northeastern reef edge.

Day 1-3 Tahiti

Tahiti’s volcanic interior gives the island a landscape rarely associated with a South Pacific arrival: dense rainforest, sharp ridgelines, and waterfalls visible from the coast road. The Intercontinental sits directly on this shoreline, and its private Lagoonarium, a protected inlet stocked with ten endangered marine species, means the resort’s own grounds double as a snorkelling site.

Most guests treat these three nights as an introduction rather than the main event: an adjustment to island time before continuing on to Taha’a, with the Lagoonarium alone worth the stay.

Day 1-3 Tahiti

Day 3-6 Taha'a

Taha’a has no commercial airport. Arrival is by boat from Raiatea, a transfer that puts Bora Bora’s outline across the channel in view before you’ve even checked in.

The Royal Beach Villa has its own pool, garden, and stretch of private beach, separate from the main resort. The overwater suites sit further out over the lagoon, each with direct steps down into the water. Three nights covers the resort properly: one day on the water, one on the reef, one doing nothing at all.

Day 3-6 Taha'a

Day 6-9 Rangiroa

The Kia Ora sits on Rangiroa’s northeastern reef edge and has run on a sustainability model since long before it became standard hotel marketing: solar power, a reef-safe waste system, and staff drawn largely from the atoll’s own population. Rooms range from beachfront bungalows to overwater suites with glass floor panels looking straight down into the lagoon.

Three nights covers a dive at the Tiputa Pass, where the current pulls in dolphins and grey reef sharks in numbers, plus at least one slower day snorkelling directly off the property.

Day 6-9 Rangiroa
