Tahiti: Learning Ori Tahiti with Māhū Dancers

Take a private ori Tahiti lesson to the beat of the toere drum, and hear how māhū have shaped Tahitian dance and culture.

A Dance at the Heart of Tahiti

Ori Tahiti is the traditional dance of Tahiti and the Society Islands, from Moorea and Bora Bora to Raiatea and Huahine. It tells stories through the hips, hands, and feet, set to drums and chant, and it is the most widely practiced dance in French Polynesia.

Children learn it from a young age, and almost every community has its dance groups.

A private lesson with a local teacher is one of the most rewarding ways to connect with the culture of the islands.

Your Lesson

dancers learning the history and movements of Tahitian dance

Lessons usually begin with the basic steps, including the fast hip movement of the ote’a and the slower, flowing gestures of the aparima, where the hands tell the story. Your teacher explains what each movement means as you go. Where it can be arranged, your lesson is led by a māhū dancer or teacher.

You learn the rhythm of the toere, a slit drum carved from wood, played live when a drummer can join you. Expect to laugh, sweat, and find muscles you did not know you had.

The Māhū of Tahiti

Māhū, meaning “in the middle,” is the Tahitian term for people assigned male at birth who live in a role between men and women. The first written European account comes from Captain William Bligh, who described māhū in his log when the Bounty stopped in Tahiti in 1789.

Māhū have long been respected as teachers and keepers of tradition, and dance is one of the places where their role in culture is most visible. Your guide can share how māhū and the more recent rāe-rāe identity are understood in Tahitian life today.

No two trips we plan are the same. Yours will be no exception.

A Tradition That Survived

In the nineteenth century, missionaries banned dancing in Tahiti, and for decades it continued only in secret. It returned in public with the first Heiva celebrations in 1881.

In 1956, Madeleine Mou’a founded the first professional dance group, and in the late twentieth century, the Conservatoire Artistique de Polynésie Française began teaching ori Tahiti, giving it the standing it holds today.

The Heiva i Tahiti

Each July, the Heiva i Tahiti brings dance groups from across the islands to Papeete for weeks of competition. Professional troupes can include more than a hundred performers, with costumes made from plant fibres, shells, and flowers.

If your trip falls in July, watching the Heiva after your lesson gives you a new appreciation of the skill on stage. Outside the festival, many resorts host performances by local groups.

Planning Your Ori Tahiti Experience

Private lessons can be arranged on Tahiti, Moorea, or Bora Bora, and they work for complete beginners. Comfortable clothing is best, and a pareo is often used for practice. Tahiti Tourisme joined the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association in 2024, and the islands are among the most welcoming in the Pacific.

Out Of Office can arrange your lesson with a respected local teacher, tickets for the Heiva, and a stay at resorts we trust. Your LGBTQ+ travel specialist can also build the experience into a longer journey through French Polynesia or a honeymoon on the islands.
