Malta Gay Honeymoons
Malta legalised same-sex marriage in 2017 and ranks consistently among Europe’s most progressive countries for LGBTQ+ rights, protections that extend well beyond the law into how openly the culture treats same-sex couples day to day. That combination of legal protection and an openly welcoming culture makes Malta one of the more relaxed Mediterranean honeymoon choices, without asking couples to trade away scenery or history to get it.
The islands reward slow exploration. Valletta’s baroque architecture and fortified walls make for an easy few days on foot, with art galleries and museums by day and a strong dining scene and LGBTQ+-friendly bars by night.
Mdina, the old walled capital inland, offers a quieter counterpoint, with narrow medieval streets largely empty once the day-trip crowds clear out by early evening.
A private boat charter is worth building into the trip.
Malta’s coastline is dotted with hidden coves and sea caves only reachable by water, the Blue Lagoon off neighbouring Comino chief among them, water clear enough to see the seabed from the deck. Cliffside restaurants along the Dingli Cliffs make a natural stop for a sunset dinner after a day on the water.
Malta’s hotel scene has grown considerably in recent years, with a number of boutique properties converted from historic palazzos now offering the kind of privacy and service same-sex couples expect from a proper honeymoon, spa treatments, private terraces, and staff well versed in hosting them without a second thought.
Best Gay Honeymoons in Malta
Planning a Gay Honeymoon in Malta
Malta has topped ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Index, the continent’s leading measure of LGBTQ+ legal protections, for several years running, ahead of far larger and better-known destinations. That ranking reflects real substance rather than a symbolic gesture: comprehensive anti-discrimination law, recognition of same-sex parents, and protections that go beyond marriage itself.
Gozo, Malta’s smaller sister island, gives couples a quieter alternative to the main island, and we often build it into the second half of a Malta honeymoon for exactly that contrast. Farmhouse hotels converted from centuries-old stone buildings dot the countryside, and the Azure Window’s collapse in 2017 has not stopped the surrounding coastline, all limestone cliffs and clear water, from being one of the archipelago’s best-kept stretches.
The Three Cities, across the harbor from Valletta, offer a quieter, more local alternative to the capital: fortified waterfronts, boutique guesthouses, and views back across to Valletta’s skyline that are especially striking at night once the buildings are lit.
Malta’s food scene draws heavily on its layered history, with Sicilian, North African, and British influences all showing up on the same menu, and we like to arrange a private dinner overlooking the Grand Harbour as one of the better ways to close out an evening on the islands.
It's hugely welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community

The Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni, a subterranean temple complex carved more than 5,000 years ago, is one of the oldest structures in the world still open to visitors, and its limited daily entry makes booking well in advance essential. Above ground, Malta’s other megalithic temples at Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra are older than Stonehenge and the pyramids, set on a clifftop overlooking the sea.
Diving is a draw here beyond the usual snorkeling. Malta’s waters hold several well-preserved wrecks, along with the Blue Hole off Gozo, a natural sinkhole connecting to open water through an underwater arch, popular with both beginner and experienced divers.
Popeye Village, the film set built for the 1980 movie musical and now open as a small waterside attraction, makes for an unexpectedly charming afternoon, with a boat trip out to the surrounding cove a good way to cool off afterward.
For couples who want a slower pace, a wine tasting at one of Malta’s smaller vineyards, many family-run and producing wine from grape varieties found nowhere else, pairs well with a late lunch overlooking the countryside.

The Best Gay Winter Sun Destinations in Europe
As much of the world plunges into the cold in winter, some places stay invitingly warm. Outside of the summer season, however, many popular holiday spots all but close down. You can enjoy winter sun in Mykonos or Santorini, but most businesses will be closed. You'll certainly get better rates but you miss the buzz travelling out of season.

Planning Your First Trip to Europe
For many Americans, a first trip to Europe is more than a holiday. It is a milestone. It might be something you have dreamed about for years, researched endlessly on Instagram, or talked about as a someday trip that finally feels within reach. It can also be overwhelming. Europe is not one destination. It is dozens of countries, languages, cultures, and travel styles packed into a relatively small area.
ReadBest Time For A Gay Honeymoon In Malta
April through June and September through October offer the best balance for a Malta honeymoon, with temperatures in the 70s and low 80s and far fewer visitors than midsummer. The Mediterranean is warm enough for swimming from May through October, making the shoulder months an easy way to get beach time without peak crowds.
July and August are hot, often into the 90s, and busiest on the coast, particularly around St. Julian’s and Sliema. Winter, from November through March, is mild but too cool for swimming and better suited to a shorter city- and history-focused stay in Valletta and Mdina.
We know where you will be welcome, and where to take more care.

Gozo, Malta’s quieter sister island, rounds out a bespoke honeymoon itinerary, is a short twenty-five-minute ferry away and pairs naturally with the main island for a slower, more romantic second half of the trip, with countryside farmhouses and dramatic coastal cliffs replacing Malta’s livelier towns.
Couples with a week or more sometimes add a few days in Sicily, a short flight or ferry away, for a combined honeymoon spanning two Mediterranean cultures.

Is Malta legal and welcoming for a gay honeymoon?
Malta has had full marriage equality since 2017 and is consistently ranked among the most LGBTQ-progressive countries in Europe on legal protections. It is a genuinely relaxed, welcoming destination for a same-sex honeymoon at every level, from hotels to restaurants to civil ceremonies.
How many days should we plan for a Malta honeymoon?
Five to seven days covers the main island and Gozo comfortably. Couples adding Sicily should plan closer to ten days.
Which is better for a honeymoon, Malta or Gozo?
Malta offers more restaurants, nightlife, and historic sites concentrated around Valletta and St. Julian’s, while Gozo is quieter and more rural, better suited to the romantic, slower-paced half of a trip. Most honeymoons include both.
The best trips begin with a conversation, not a booking form.

Secluded Tahiti & Rangiroa Tour
Tailor-made HolidayThis itinerary moves through three of French Polynesia's quieter islands, each reached only by boat or short inter-island flight, and each rarely appearing on a first-time visitor's itinerary. It suits travellers who have already done Bora Bora, or who would rather skip it, in favour of a slower, less-photographed route through French Polynesia. The journey begins on Tahiti, where volcanic peaks meet a coastline still shaped by the island's original Polynesian settlements.

Ultimate Luxury: French Polynesia
Tailor-made HolidayThis itinerary is built around the highest tier of accommodation French Polynesia has to offer, and around the freedom to move between islands without waiting on ferry schedules. Private planes and helicopters cover the inter-island transfers, which on an itinerary spanning several atolls saves real time otherwise lost to inter-island logistics. The islands themselves remain the point.

Gay Honeymoon in Bora Bora: Tahiti, Taha’a & More
Tailor-made HolidayBora Bora is the honeymoon most couples picture when they imagine French Polynesia: overwater bungalows suspended above a lagoon that shifts through every shade of blue, Mount Otemanu rising behind it, and a level of privacy that has made the island one of the most reliably LGBTQ+ welcoming honeymoon destinations anywhere in the South Pacific.

Mauritius: The Out Of Office Collection
Tailor-made HolidayMauritius is one of the LGBTQ+-friendly pearls of the Indian Ocean. Unlike its Indian Ocean neighbour the Maldives, Mauritius is comprised of a single island. Mauritius is considered a superb beach destination, especially on the north side of the island, where the longest stretch of beaches can be found. Our favourite beach in Mauritius is Belle Mare Plage, a peaceful and palm-lined shore with powder-white sands.

The Southern Maldives: Pullman Maamutaa & Park Hyatt Hadahaa
Tailor-made HolidayThe Southern Maldives operates on a different scale from the atolls clustered near Malé. Gaafu Alifu, where both properties sit, is roughly five to six hours away by speedboat, or a shorter domestic flight followed by a transfer, and that distance does the real work of keeping the atoll quiet. It filters out day-trippers, leaving reefs with far less traffic than the more accessible northern resorts.
