Cape Town’s skyline doesn’t lack icons, but The Silo Hotel has redefined the city’s silhouette. Rising above the V&A Waterfront in a restored 1920s grain silo, this striking glass-and-concrete landmark blends architectural drama with a deeply personal design vision.

The exterior, reimagined by architect Thomas Heatherwick, retains its industrial roots while glowing with faceted convex windows that billow out over the harbour like lanterns. Inside, the tone shifts completely. Here, colour, texture, and curated art fill every inch of space with warmth, eccentricity, and bold personality.

Each of the 28 rooms and suites is individually styled by hotelier Liz Biden, combining heritage details with contemporary African design. Expect velvet sofas, Egyptian crystal chandeliers, custom ceramics, and floor-to-ceiling views of Table Mountain or the Atlantic Ocean.

The bathrooms are a standout, with freestanding tubs centred beneath 18-foot windows, offering some of the best bath views in the world. While exclusivity defines the experience, it’s not only about the rooms. Guests and visitors alike can access The Silo’s restaurants, art gallery, and rooftop.

Beneath the hotel, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa positions The Silo at the heart of Cape Town’s cultural transformation.

Accommodation

Silo Room

Framed by the building’s iconic convex windows, each room offers sweeping views over Cape Town, with interiors that blend bold colour, bespoke furnishings, and playful sophistication. At approximately 47 square metres (just over 500 square feet), it’s the hotel’s entry-level category, but nothing about it feels standard.

Expect layered textures, original artworks, and a mix of antique and modern design curated by Liz Biden. A freestanding bathtub takes centre stage beside the soaring windows, while high ceilings and mirrored accents enhance the sense of space and light. Each room is uniquely styled, making no two stays the same.

Ideal for solo travellers or couples, the Silo Room combines thoughtful luxury with dramatic views of Table Mountain, the harbour, or Cape Town’s cityscape. It’s private, design-led, and unmistakably part of one of Africa’s most iconic hotels.
